Intravenous fluids or IV's can contain a variety of things, depending on what the doctor ordered for you. Some just contain sugar and water to hydrate you. Others contain medicine etc. Iv's are used to slowly inject the necessary fluids you need in a slower way. Especially if you are unable to take meds orally due to vomiting, etc. Never be afraid or ashamed to ask the nurse of doctor what is in the IV they are administering to you or your friend/family! You should always know why and what is being injected into your body intravenously. Also, if you feel pain in your entire arm, it's because the 'drip' is too fast. Tell the nurse and she could slow the drip down and this will relieve the pain.
