named "Sofia Loren", Sofia is not adjusting well to the new kitten. She hisses and growls at him, why is she so mad? and how long do you think it will take them to become friends, i am scared she will hurt him but thankfully she is de clawed. thanks for your answers
p.s at first when we got the kitty on Friday 8-24 Sofia was pretty much howling with anger and running the opposite direction while growling loudly, now she is showing interest but only quietly growling and chasing him around and batting at him but then running away from him i hope this means she is not as upset anymore.
p.s my 6 yr old named the kitten "Sniffie Lee"
(smile)

part of the problem is in fact the declaw.... declawed cats often become more agressive to other animals.. they need to show they are tough since really they are not...as such they often biters and more apt to attack unprovoked becuase they dont want to be attacked first...

anyhow the new kitten should be kept in a room to itself for 2-3 weeks.. allowing them to sniff paws under the door... then the kitten out for supervised visits only when you can be around.. (in room at night)..
another problem you have is that the kitten is going to require kitten food and your adult needs adult food so seperating them allows you to feed seperately as well

hopefully it will work out in the end

rememeber the rule of thumb - 1 litter box per cat... and preferably 1 more in an other part of the house..

This is a time issue, it's going to take time for Sofia to adjust to the kitten and the same goes for the kitten too. Sofia thinks she's not going to be loved anymore since the new one arrived. If fur starts to fly, fighting I mean, get a squirt gun and squirt them both in the faces. Cats hate water in the face and will back down real fast. Yell at them too, loud, to make them see that you don't like their behavior. I hope this helps!

Heatherd is right on the money. What you're seeing is pretty much normal, especially since Sophia seems used to being an only kitty.

Given a little time, Sophia might even start taking a 'maternal' interest in the new baby. I used to have a great big male who decided to be 'daddy' to a new kitten my mother brought me when her momma and siblings were carried off.

Its a territorial issue, your first cat has laid 'claim' to you and your family. (Ever noticed how you cat will always rub against you? Its not just out of love, its to get her scent on you to let others knows your 'hers'.) Cats never like new arrivals because they feel like the new cat is 'trespassing on their property', and might think they will not be loved as much anymore. They will fight with the new arrival to show dominance(To show that its THEIR house and THEIR humans) and to "hopefully" drive them away.
Cats can either be very social animals or extremely independent. So the fighting period never last very long as your cats will soon get used to each other (and their scents) and become friends. Especially if your older cat is female and you brought home a young kitten, her maternal instincts should kick in soon. Within as short as a few weeks, your cats will be inseparable!

I am one of the biggest animal lovers, and from my experience, your cat is just jealous and in time will grow out of it! Right now, shes getting to know the kitten, she will slowly start playing with it, and one day you will walk in and they will be cuddled up cleaning each other or taking naps. Its ok, they will adapt! Then she wont be so lonely when no one's home!
