It's all about convenience, delusions and any way to salvage one's reputation.

Jesus doesn't mind if we come to Him only after we've totally screwed up our lives, but unfortunately, it's all too common and all too easy to pull the "I found God" card when we have blown it on our own.
Yes, I do believe that Jesus is there to save them from them selves, and the Holy Spirit immediately begins to do a work in them to try to bring permanent changes to their hearts; but all too often once the hard times are over, they soon forget all about God.
As far as Michael Vic and Paris Hilton, I truly hope that both take their confessions seriously, and hopefully come to be good examples of what positive changes can be made in a person when they come to Christ, but...time will tell. God bless.

i can't speak to the sincerity of michael vick or paris hilton...i have my own personal opinions about them, but that adds nothing to the discussion...let's just say i HOPE they are both sincere, but i'm in a 'wait & see' mode on that...your question does bring up an interesting point-there seem to be relatively few 'lottery winner press conference' conversions, don't there? part of that is, i think, human nature-when things are going well, we tend to think that we are in control, deserve every bit of 'good fortune' that comes our way...it is only when times are tough that we cry out for someone or something to save us...
Christ is always there, patiently waiting, hoping for us to open up and ask Him into our hearts and lives...i think a lot of people from all 'classes' of society, come to the point where they realize, "this crap isn't working, i'm all alone, and i just can't DO this"-when the searching and all the "things" they have struggled for don't satisfy...that's when a lot of us find Christ...and He loves us and has promised to change us-whoever we are, wherever we are...

Mark, the answer is easy and it is seen in the corruption that has taken place with respect to the scriptures and the whole ideology of the way. They use Jesus as their perpetual sign that no one can judge them and that they are forgiven by God so what they did before is of little concern from a heavenly perspective. It's a poor attempt to use Jesus as a scapegoat and appear saved from their wrong doing. If the teachings were how they were originally taught then such people wouldn't use it in the manner that they do. But imo what Micheal Vick condoned and was apart of is sick to me, I love animals and especially dogs, whom are innocent. Animals are our lesser brothers.
But then again people do often need to be shocked and awed out of a former state in order to open their eyes to the reality that they have to change their lives. The events in our lives which we are under the scope and being tried so to speak, or the negative cycles are often times great opportunities to grow and change. Prior to these most people are conditioned and unaware of what they are doing, on auto-pilot. And no one is garbage, who are you to judge, and what makes your life so much more perfect then them?

If they are in fact using it to salvage their public image as you profess, then I would imagine it pisses Jesus off. The same as the people who "find" Jesus because they're afraid of hell, if you ask me.
Who's to say that they didn't, though? Jail gives one a lot of time to think, reflect, and evaluate. Maybe the time just gives them the break they need to decide they don't like the direction their life is going.
I've seen some obvious fakers, and then I've seen some who looked pretty legit. If you ever saw the interview with Ted Bundy the day before his execution, for instance, there's no doubting his conviction. But others it seems like a routine that they feel the need to act out.

I think it is a reaction to a hopeless situation. It sounds good to the public, so that is one upside. and if they believe it whole-heatedly or not, it helps them through the situation. Micheal Vick and Paris Hilton never cared about what they did, or who they hurt. They assumed that $ made them invincable. So-when $ didn't protect them from jail-they turned to Jesus to give them a hand. Its a desperate act from selfish individuals. It's commonly called ''Jailhouse Religion'' because once they leave the cell, Jesus stays behind.

I'm going to make some generalizations, so forgive me for that.
1. The ones you specifically name fall into the group whose public realtions people told them that would improve their rotten image.
2. In prison, you get a lot of people similar to #1 above, but without an agent.
3. In prison, you tend to have people with a lot of time on their hands. Some percent of them reads the Bible, if for no other reason than to pass time, and some percent of those actually have their eyes opened.

People tend to think about there lives when they are in tough situations and thats when they think or thats when they meet Jesus. Its like doing a dead end job and one day realising this, and then you decide to study.
Jesus is only too willing to accept anyone who comes with a contrite heart. If you are using his name "just to salvage your public image" then you would not be genuine aand so that would mean nothing to Jesus.

When you are "up there", soaring with the eagles so to speak, non-Christians have no need for God. They have it all and the world on a string. Its when you hit the bottom, get in trouble, have a death in the family, or some other tragic event that people begin a search for God. He is always there. He was there when they had it all, He just did not have their attention.
Some fortunate people find God, when they are at their best in life, and they are truly blessed. God seems to be at His best, when we are at our worst.
If anyone just uses the name of Jesus, to get a lighter sentence or to hope the court will be more lenient, then the consequences of that act is between them and God. He alone will judge and His wrath is worse than any that man can dream up.

As a Christian, I hate these jailhouse conversions...like the pics of Paris Hilton carrying around a bible a while back. I can't read their minds and hearts, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Vick fall back to his old ways once jail is over. I hope I'm proved wrong. Seriously.

Jesus loves the human garbage as much as He loves you and me. I think criminals want to be loved and forgiven if they reach rock bottom. It's like throwing a drowning man a life jacket. They are desperate to remain on top. I don't think Jesus would mind if a person is sincerely sorry within his soul. For those who aren't sincere and are just using Him, I think He would be sad.
