Short answer: You ask Him.
Pray for knowledge of His will for you and the power to carry it out. Make sure you want to know, however, because once you ask, you will be shown, and it's not always easy (thus asking for the power to carry it out).

Alot of people have listed Bible verses, which is the best way to go, but in case you aren't really comfortable with it (yet), check out a book called "the purpose driven life" by Rick Warren. There was a huge craze over it a few years ago, church-goers & non-church-goers alike went nuts-it's not alot of religious jargon, it's straightforward, no-nonsense, to the point. It includes hundreds of Bible verses & is divided into little 2-3 page sections so you aren't overloaded with info.
The fact that you are searching is beautiful:) "seek first the kingdom of God & His righteousness...and these things will be given to you".

First you have to know God. After that get baptized in water and in the Holy Spirit. Attend a Spirit-led church, study the word, pray and worship God regularly. Know the Holy Spirit intimately and allow Him to direct you in your spiritual walk every step of the way and He will lead you to discover God's purpose for your life. This is the process to know God's will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding (Colossians 1:9).

Are you a christian? if not forget it, its a waist of time. If so, pray, read his word, fellowship with his people, you will not find God's purpose for you in a bar, pool hall, etc. If you are doing these things, ask God, what is your plan for my life today. don't worry about tomorrow, cause he want let you know that much in advance. Just know it will be good, it is a day by day walk.

By reading the Bible and doing what it says. I know that sounds rather simplistic, but as it is written:
Proverbs 3:5-8 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.
God's purpose for your life comes to pass when you start acknowledging Him in all that you do. God is looking for people who will be like Jesus who was prayerful and who say "not my will, but thy will be done".

For a Christian, our purpose is to seek God and come to know Him. All those other thing such as do good deeds, etc. will flow from seeking Him.
We seek and find God through obeying His commandment to love our neighbor as ourselves. For where love is, there God is also. If we attempt to come to know our neighbor, we will find how to help and God will engineer our experiences so that we come to know Him.

If you're an American, doing God's purpose seems to be ripping off gullible people. So maybe you should add the title 'Reverend' to your name and go forth and do 'God's work'.

For that time being you need to grow in your faith. When you will grow you can receive spiritual hearing. Your heart will prompt you what to do, how to act or behave in varied situations. Now it is better for you to be guided by the Gospel than by other people. If you will be attentive God will give you guidance.

To find God's purpose in your life you need to ask questions that pertain to his purpose for the earth? The earth was created to be inhabited and God created man to take care of it and subdue it, not the way you see mankind doing today, but in a way that is in harmony with his will.
To understand that God did not create man for heavenly life is the first step. Jesus said that the meek would inherit the earth: Mathew 5:5. Why did he say this? Because he knew what his father had promised at Psalms 37:9-11,29. Now that you know God's purpose for his earth, then ask yourself where do you fit into this arrangement?
You must realize that the issue that has caused so much trouble on earth and still is causing issue is whether God has the right to rule over man? (Sovereignty) He did not create us to be puppets, but rather he made us free thinkers to decide for ourselves whether we would serve him or follow the Devils way of worldly rule?
So you see that your purpose is to make that decision, but in order to do this you have to know what his plans are for the earth and for you. This requires that you study his word and apply it in your life. He has written 66 letters to you and gives you the opportunity to research them and find out all the things he requires in order to gain eternal life on his earth.
You start at John 17:3
It's also a good idea to compare all that you think you know with what the bible says, then put your trust in the bible and discard all false thoughts that you have accepted as true.
For example Immortality of the soul?
Read Ecclesiastes 9:5,10 Ecclesiastes 3:19,20.
The important thing is to ask questions and seek not mans answers, but rather God's answers and put your trust in his word. This means not taking one scriptural thought as accurate, but make sure of all things by using several thoughts to confirm the truth of things written.
God's purpose is for you to come to an accurate knowledge of his word and apply it in your life and serve and follow the ways that give you everlasting life on earth. It also makes his heart joyful. (James 1:26-27) 26 If any man seems to himself to be a formal worshiper and yet does not bridle his tongue, but goes on deceiving his own heart, this man’s form of worship is futile. 27 The form of worship that is clean and undefiled from the standpoint of our God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their tribulation, and to keep oneself without spot from the world.
By keeping yourself without spot from the world and seeking the truth of his word you will find his purpose in your life.(Proverbs 27:11) 11 Be wise, my son, and make my heart rejoice, that I may make a reply to him that is taunting me.
