Male missionaries usually serve for a period of 24 months.
Female missionaries usually serve for a period of 18 months.

The goals of each missionary vary. Many missionaries set personal goals about following the rules of the mission, service for people, scripture study, writing more frequently in their journal, or anything else really. There are also often mission goals about talking to a certain amount of people or performing service. Some districts, (which are a smaller group of missionaries) also set their own goals.

Most missionaries serve the full length of time, although some may extend for brief periods, and some may return home early for medical or other reasons.

Most of the missionaries that I have known have learned more about themselves than anything else. A mission gives a young man or a young woman a unique opportunity to forget themselves and serve the Lord, and by doing so, many that I've known have truly found themselves and come to understand what they believe, what their strengths and weaknesses are, and what their relationship to God is.

Young people are not the only ones that serve a mission. Older couples and single sisters over 50 can also serve. Frequently they perform service missions rather than proselytizing. Their missions are usually 2 years.
