While in basic training, you get a small portion of your pay that is just enough to cover hair cuts, cleaning, and basic necessities. there isn't anyting you are allowed to spend your pay on during basic training so they remove temptation by leaving you with just enough for a small luxury or two along the way.

He is not pulling her leg. When he gets to his technical training school after basic training, one of the first things he will do is fill outa travel voucher and when that gets paid, he will be paid the rest of the money he earned during basic training and some additional for the trip to technical school.

Usually pay is caught up within 2-3 weeks after reporting to his technical school and filing the voucher.

Base pay for basic is $1203.90
Minus taxes, he should still be pulling $900 a month. Not sure what else they would take out at that point. And, really, he doesn't need very much of that. He has housing and he has his meals provided. He can't go out partying. He's probably underage, so he shouldn't be buying alcohol. He can't leave the base. He should have more than enough money to cover expenses! Even with a car payment, he should still be fine.

actually it is probably true. First pays do not hit for 6-8 weeks, and the actual first paycheck will have several hundred dollars taken out for items that were purchased when he arrived.. uniforms, toiletries, etc. Single Sailors get no other monies whatsoever, and if he went in as an E1, his monthly base pay is $1301.40. so divvy that in half, you get $650. counting taxes and whatnot, it is QUITE probably that his first paycheck was in the $400 range and that it appeared just before he graduated Boot Camp.

When you are an E-1 with full room and board you don't get paid much because you don't have any expenses.
