Well, with schools spending less time teaching, budget cuts, and lack of teachers, I am going to have to say, it is partially the schools fault. But the other issue is, do the parents know basic geography? My father is incredibly intelligent, and most of the things I know, I learned from him. So, if you have a family who do nothing more than watch the telly and play video games then my guess is that you will have kids who are not very knowledgeable either.

Did it say the age of those Americans? For some reason the answer "Those fifth are little children" popped into my head. lol

Anyways I heard this too a long time ago. But it was " A fifth of American college students can't locate the US on the map"
It's because in some schools things like that are not very important.
not at my school though...we had the map pounded into our brains. @_@ we had to study it for weeks and take a test on where different countries were

Schools don't put a heavy emphasis on Geography after the 8th grade. Much of what we're taught afterward relies on color coded close up maps of only our country. We need a greater emphasis on geography in later years of schooling.
