My new kitty is a stray, the sweetest male cat in the world, however, he does not use the litterbox! I'm guessing he's so used to being outside that he does not know how to use it.. so he just poos on the carpet or floor whenever he has to go. My mom told me it's almost impossible to teach a cat how to use a litterbox since they're stubborn and usually learn this on their own.. but is there a way to teach him? What do you reccommend? Thanks! :)

ok, he's probably not going to like this, but you have to put the litterbox in the smallest room in your house (probably your bathroom) - and he's going to have to stay there when you are not home. So have his basket, food and water in there too. Next up, go dig up some earth from your garden and have that in the box instead of catsand. This sounds gross, but if you can find some cat poo to put in with the sand, do that. Feed him dinner, then go drop him in the cat box, and close the bathroom door and hope for the best. The most important thing here is for him to develop a little bit of self control, you are right, he's not used to having to find a spot to go! Also, be sure not to clean up the poo with anything that has ammonia in it, as this smells like cat wee to them, and he'll go right on using that spot. Cats don't like citrus, so use that if you can. With a little patience, he should learn. Like a puppy, every time you feed him, pick him up and put him in the box, if he's had a drink, put him in the box! Eventually, once he's used to it, you can slowly start putting a bit of cat sand with the soil, and change the mix till he's using complete cat sand.

Good luck!

I found an abandoned kitten once. I put him in the bathtub with a container full of regular dirt. He used it. Then using the same container I emptied it, do not wash it, and put kitty litter in it. If he makes a mistake, put the mistake in the litter box. Use vinegar and water to clean the smell off of everything or one of those pet smell cleaner products. Do not use bleach or other floor cleaners. After the cleaner smell goes away the cat can smell his mistake again and will go there again.

Uh...actually I have two cats myself and both are strays. Thankfully both are trained to use the litterbox. How I trained them is like...after they had eaten, i placed them on the litterbox and just stared at them. But then again usually cats know that they're supposed to use it. Good luck though.

not sure how old this cat is? if its adult maybe hard to train and you are suppose to put the cat in small space with it for awhile so it gets used to it dont' l et them have run of the house for a few days. if it doesn't use it then it maybe too old. if its the litter which could be cheap stuff buy the scoupable kind its best kind for it try it sometimes it burns them when tehy are going and they wont' use it.

Ok, Put him in the litterbox then take his paw and make him scratch around in it.

Make sure his litterbox is big enough so he feels he has enough room and feels comfortable.
