They are ordered by the president to the nation's capital, where they will operate high-tech weapons systems against any potential air threat.

This is an air defense outfit of about 150 troops. Since 9/11 the US capital's ground to air capacity has been beefed up a great deal. I would guess that these specialized folks are doing their rotation. I doubt if one would use this type of tech outfit for riot control. There are infantry outfits within useful distance of DC for that as was demonstrated several times.

" Members of the 1st Battalion 265 Air Defense Artillery have mobilized and are on a plane headed first to Ft. Bliss, then for federal active duty in the capital region."

"Air Defense Artillery" says it all these are not ground combat troops.

"Federal Duty" and "Capital Region" does not necessarily mean they will all be in downtown Washington, D.C.

Lets not panic just yet people.

What many people don;t know is that reservists have been deploying to DC since 9/11. Deployment simply means being sent to a location in support of a current military operation. Many folks think that deployment means being sent overseas only, but many of the units in the states are involved in direct support of the missions in Iraq, so any reservists or active duty being sent to that area to directly shore up that mission are considered deployed. My husband, who is active duty AF and stationed at Andrews is considered deployed because his job...bringing the injured soldiers and sailors back to the US and moving them to the appropriate military medical facility...is in direct support of the operations in Iraq. We do not get seperation pay or hazardous duty pay, but he is still considered deployed, as are all the people (many of them reservists) he works with.

Wow thats very interesting and also kind of scary.
This could actually be a sign of many things. Washington may have had a threat, Bush could be getting ready to declare a state of emergency, martial law, it could even mean Bush is staging a coup. Great question and link. Thanks

Edit: Rumor has it that they are deployed just in time for the big protest march on Washington in Sept.

The real reason is that W and Cheney know their crimes are about to be made public, and they fear an uprising by the American people, so they called the military there to protect their sorry asses.
