Sure can. My dogs came with the names Angel and Buster...they have been changed to Aina and Tatsu, respectively. One of my friend's dogs came with the name "Pig," he's now called Yuki. It doesn't matter what age the dog is, any dog can learn a new name (Aina was at least two, possibly older, when we adopted her). For older dogs that have had a rough start in life, giving it a new name can help it move on. In cases where a dog was abused it probably associates people calling it's name with pain and fear so giving it a new name can help break that association. If the dog thinks "Spot, come!" means "I'm going to beat you now," changing the name to Fido can help give the come command a whole new meaning.

I'm not a big fan of calling the dog by the old name and then using the new name...I think that's more confusing to the dog than just calling it by the new name. Dogs are smarter than that. Just like if you were visiting a foreign country where you didn't understand the language and someone decided to give you a nickname without explaining it to you you would quickly learn that they were talking to you, a dog will quickly figure out that this new combination of sounds (new name) means them. A new dog needs basic training anyway even if the previous owner trained it, so teaching an "old" dog a new name really shouldn't be any different from teaching an 8 week old puppy a name.

Ya you can change it, I changed my dog's name that was 8 years old when we got it cause its nam was wak. just call him by the old name and then while he is coming to you call him by the new name. Then cange it up call him by the new name until it realises your talking to it or gets its attention with the old name then commnd it with the new name. I'm actual doing this at this very second, since I brought my new puppy home today.

If you change the dog's name, it'll most likely confuse the poor thing. For it's a dog.. not a puppy. Think about changing a toddler's name once they finally start answering and adjusting to it. Definitely keep it's name, or else you might be faced with an unresponsive or disobedient dog.

A 3 year old is not a puppy anymore. Better keep the name, he is used to it or at least change it to a similar one (starting with same letter, having the same length, etc)

a 3 year old puppy isn't really a puppy anymore...
and yes, you can change it's name as long as it responds to it's new name.

I bought a dog last year and wanted to change its name. All you have to do is, when you call it, say the its name, and then the one you want to change it to. For instance if it was called bob and you wanted to call it terry, call it bob-terry for a while. It wil get used to this new name and in time you will be able to call it it´s new name!

3 year old is not a puppy, it is an adult dog. And you should keep the name he already has, it is part of his identity and you don't want to disorient the dog. He already knows who he is, it is better to use the same name.
