The abuse of protein intake can cause severe liver problems. The more amino acids you consume, the more you liver has to work. This extra work will not produce any problems right away, but with time this might lead to chronic liver problems, and even liver failure.
How much is too much? That depends on the person and the amount of exercise you do. Thumb of rule for me is, not less than 15% and no more than 30% of my daily calories should come from protein. In my case I try not to go over 50 to 60 grams of protein a day. As a runner that works quite well, but I do try to eat low fat protein foods to control also my cholesterol levels.
Bottom line is: protein is important to keep a healthy body, but too much of it would get you sick.

It's extremely hard to eat an excess of protein. Bodybuilders eat 1.5-2 grams per lb on their body. That can be up to 400 grams a day. But excess anything can be stored as fat in the body, so, if you workout rarely, don't be eating 300 grams of protein a day.
