Most Standard def. DVD players use a DVD decoder chip from MediaTek. In that sense, the core capabilities (videoplayer, DVD reader, etc.) are pretty much the same across most models. However, different manufacturers have different quality standards and they may enhance a player with special s/w features, better user interface, etc.
Unless you buy a DVD player with Faroudja or HQV post-processing, avoid upscaling/upconverting players. In that case, your HDTV can probably good as good a job, if not better.
So, either buy an HD/Blu-Ray player or buy the cheapest DVD player with component out. You will replace it in a couple of years anyhow.

Yes it matters.
Better quality machines can scan forward faster and show better images when they do. They also read the disk ahead of where the movie is playing to reduce the image jiggles and and pops when your disk is so-so or dirty.
They also have better sound out capabilities. The new cable is an all-in-one design the eliminates the red yellow and white wires, or the S-video cable. They are capable of displaying the full resolution in the digital format they call 1080p.
It is important to match the player and the TV. Otherwise you will be wasting the capabilities of one or the other.
;-D Quality machines should last longer as well, but who knows? I also hope they have a better service policy, but ... oh well.

it depends really on how you use it, do you want surround sound, are you setting it up to multiple gadgets, what types of dvds do you want to play etc.
genrally speaking no, its like all those people that spend £1000 on a tv £300 on a dvd player & then £3.99 on a scart lead. they may as well have a £150 tv & £20 dvd player.
Id suggest to buy one, if you get on with it & it does the job youve saved yourself a fortune. if not then take it back & look for better.

Some of them will produce a better quality picture than others, or have more advanced features.
