We would like it to have some growing room and we have looked at the Dawes Giro 300 45cm as an option.

I meant a road racing bicycle. Preferably in England. Anybody got a good cheap one?

250 Pounds will get you an excellent bike that will last ages.

I bought my daughter a bike from Islabikes. You won't have heard of them, probably, but they only make specialist bikes for kids. My daughter's bike is superb quality and very well equipped. You won't get suspension forks or too many gears that kids can't use anyway, but you'll get the level of equipment a kid needs. It will also be much lighter than a bike with all that unnecessary equipment.

Importantly, it looks cool too.

Cor, I wish at 10 years old I'd been able to say "I don't want to spend more than £250"!!

Have a look at Specialized's Hotrock range - very good kid's bikes in a range of frame and wheel sizes, I'm sure he'll find something he likes there (they all look pretty good too!)

The guys at the shop will size him up for the bike, make sure its set up safely, and any shop I ever went to offers a first free service - take the bike in after 4-6 weeks, and they tune it up, to take into account the cables stretching etc.

The only road bike for a youth that I know is available right now is made by Trek- the KDR1000. You can get these at Evans Cycles... I think they sell for about 325.00.

I don't know about UK prices, but no 10 year old can take advantage of a bike that costs over £100 and will probably need a new one for growth spurts if he manages to take care of this one.

£250? You can get a really good bike for half that amount. I bought a bike for my nine year old nephew in May for £120 at Halfords.
