A day trip to PEI is going to suck up too much time. It will take hours just to drive there.

Consider a harbour tour - the tall ship Silva sails Halifax Harbour. Or you can break up your day by taking the ferry which operates between Halifax and Dartmouth. It'll cost you about $3.50 round trip and takes half an hour.

On Saturday morning head to the Farmer's Market in the Old Brewery. It's great fun, lots of things to nibble on and entertainers and good crowd watching.

If you're into history, Halifax is loaded with museums and forts. The Citadel is good for military history, as is the Maritime Museum, the HMCS Sackville and Admiralty House. Pier 21 is a must - it's our Ellis Island.

Take a stroll along the boardwalk - it runs from the Casino to Pier 21. And wander through the Public Gardens. They're the finest example of formal Victorian Gardens in North America.

If you're going to Peggy's Cove, make a day of it and continue on along the South Shore to Lunenburg. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Have lunch overlooking the harbour and check out the fisheries museum, but also wander the town and look at the architecture.

You should do a cruise on Bluenose II - it divides its time between berths in Halifax and Lunenburg. Check with tourism or your hotel in Halifax.

When you go to the Bay of Fundy, go to Halls Harbour and maybe plan to have lobster from the pound there. They have picnic tables set up by the wharf. Or drop into the Grand Pre Winery - good restaurant and nice tasting area. Grand Pre National Historic Site is also important. (It's the site of the deporation of the Acadians.) For a really cheap and cheerful lunch, stop at the Evangeline Motel at the corner above the park. Or try the Tempest Restaurant in Wolfville.

In Halifax for Irish music go to the Triangle Pub - I forget the intersection it's at, but it's only two blocks from the Legislature.

Little Fish on Argyle is good for a casual meal in the evening and McKelvie's for seafood.

Oh yeah, check out the Maude Lewis collection at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. They actually have her house inside the museum. Hers is a sad, moving story.

The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has a lot of good exhibits from the age of sail, the Titanic disaster and the two world wars, etc. Go to the nearby Lower Deck pub for some "fish music". Near the Lower Deck is Bluenose II's slip, so go for a sail. Lunenburg and Mahone Bay are worth visiting.

The scenery will be beautiful. Maybe a day trip to Prince Edward Island would work also.
