Myxomatosis.
Symptoms are loss of appetite, then runny eyes and nose. Also their eyes appear to "bulge".
It is a viral disease which is passed on by bites from insects such as mosquitoes or fleas. However, it can also be passed on from rabbit to rabbit.
Rabbits can have a vaccine to protect them - costing between £10 and £30 - heard this on the TV news this morning. The vaccine does not stop a rabbit catching the disease - but it is said that it can change the disease from being fatal into one that is treatable.
It caused the death of a large number of wild and domestic rabbits in the 1950s and since then has been responsible for a number of deaths in rabbits - one bad time being in Autumn 2000 when it spread across various southern areas of England.
It mostly affects rabbits living outside.

The disease is myxomatosis and is mostly carried by rabbit fleas. Keeping your rabbit hutch clean will reduce the likelihood of infection but your brother is right - get your bunny inoculated against myxomatosis and at least one other killer disease, the name of which I can't remember!

I think it is called myxomatosis. But I would think that a pet caged rabbit would be safe from infection. It is very dangerous for wild rabbits and spreads rapidly from one to another as they come into contact with each other.
