you do that for yourself. Thank yourself -give credit to whom its due- to you. Your own children will teach more than the bible ever could. A nasa photo can teach more about the universe than the bible ever could. Jesus didnt help you lose weight you started exercising...
Wake up please and stop worshiping an ultimatum and fear.
We are in this together.
God if he exists is watching us all turn to sin so he can begin the End of Days???... does any mother or father out there just let your kids do whatever they want- God is not a very good Dad. Or how about our perfect being just do it all right in the first place instead of sending billions of souls to burn in hell-why- because they didnt believe His Son was Him. Huh?!
Or -how about we just made Him up long ago so death and the stars could all make sense.
Lets grow up we own telescopes and with medicine we know why people die. Its not a big mystery folks.
Life after death-only 1 way to find out- what a perfect set-up for religion

I disagree. My Christian faith makes me a better dad. At the minimum it teaches me principles I can use while raising my kids.

God doesn't let us do whatever we want. He disciplines his children just as we do ours.

WRT the first question I agree with Craig R. Even religious people who behave badly claim that without their religious belief they would behave worse (a scary thought but probably true). Another scary thought is that you and I will face judgment and may or may not get another go at life. Some people rebel against the idea that they are not in complete control of their destiny and focus on the worst religious ideas ever presented to enable their denial of a supreme authority.

Now explain to me again how belief that we will be judged by an impartial and just god and rewarded or punished appropriately is going to encourage bad behavior.

Religion often makes people worse then better.

For example many Christians think that they need to smack their children because "it says so in the bible" despite the fact that smacking children; a. doesn't work and b. is very bad for them.

Then there are the very religious neighbours who constantly pray for people and the religious people who view their spouse as inferior to them.

The Bible can teach you about everything you need to know in life. Is a gift that God has given us to give us direction in our lives. in Proverbs you can learn about parenting. In Job about resilience and long suffering. In 1st Corinthians about love. In the Gospels about the love of God for us. I mean you learn history, living techniques, counseling etc... God has given us THE BOOK that guides us through all of our life. Now, all you have to do is do an honest reading of it and you can see for yourself.

i agree with you. my friend brought this up in a fight over babysitting and she's christian and I'm atheist. she said there were too many differences and we couldn't work together and i asked her to give me a reason and she said that she was catholic and i was atheist and that it mattered on how you babysit kids. it really hurts to hear that from religious people just because you lack one.
