Religion suppresses the fact that biblical people had little understanding of what went on in the World that they lived in (they believed that the earth was flat). If you could be transported back to biblical times with a cigarette lighter, those ancient people would worship you as God because you could make fire come from your hands, were as they had to work for 30 min to produce a flame. As mankind gained more and more knowledge and understanding, they replaced what they called God with accurate descriptions. If biblical people saw a UFO, they called it God. Today we call it a UFO. (The government calls it a weather balloon.)

God shows himself directly or obviously only when he has a new message that he needs to deliver to the world. The last time this happened was the time of Christ and the apostles. At that time, Jesus delivered his message to the apostles, who delivered it to the world--miracles and other overt signs from God reinforced the message at the time. Now the message is firmly established in writing and in history (in the form of the New Testament).
This only happened a few times throughout the entire Bible: Noah, Moses, Elijah & Elisha, and Jesus & the apostles. There have been no "updates" from God since the time of the apostles, so God has not had a need to show himself openly since then. We have the most recent update of God's will in the New Testament (John 20:31; 21:25)

Because He is working through His Spirit, the way Jesus said in John 15 and 16.
And Hebrews 1 says:
1 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son,
He has these times talked about in the Bible. He has the times after this recorded in the Bible. All Christians have to do is figure out what it says, and how to divide it rightly.
In order to do that I recommend a severe change for most of them, to drop the traditions and depend on God's Spirit to teach them. Unlikely as it may be, some probably will do just that. I hope.

I don't know but what I do believe is that God is still showing himself today, it's just very hard to see or hear him amidst our concrete jungles and modern time distractions.

Over active imaginations from lack of entertainment, or from the same hallucinogenic mold on their wheat that grew on the wheat during the Salem Witch Trials, or maybe it just simply never happened at all. Go ahead and boo me it doesn't bother me a bit.

It's not that God doesn't reveal himself anymore.
It's just that people either refuse to recognize him, or don't believe what they see.
A school bus full of children was on a bridge when it collapsed in Minneapolis and none of those children was seriously injured. To me, that's God showing himself.
