I leave it up, just to make sure that it has flushed properly. What if you closed the lid, left the room and it over-flows?
I would leave it open, be sure and wash your hands.

Unless it is a male household where women rarely visit - always leave the seat and lid down.
People don't want to look inside a toilet if they are just going in to wash their hands.
Women might think the seat is down and not look at end up sitting on a very cold toilet. This is especially important if you are an overnight guest and use it during the night as some people don't turn the light on.

Seems like opinions on this one vary!
I've always understood that the most courteous way to leave the toilet after use (apart from clean, of course) is with the seat down and the lid/cover up.
That way, no-one rushes in in the dark and sits on a cold rim, or a closed lid, unexpectedly ~ with predictably upsetting results!

As far as I know, the most respectable position for the toilet seat after use is to put the seat down (if you're a guy) and then close the lid.

If I were you, I would leave it the way it was when i came in. But usually, the typical position of the toilet is that the seat (or lid, in your description) should be left down, while the lid is up. (It would make the toilet more inviting ;P)

I think it should be left closed. If it's a guy's place, then he'll just lift both the lid and the seat to pee. if it's a girl's place, she'll just lift the lid. that way, both girl and guy needs to lift something--fair?
i also like it closed because i think what goes in the toilet should stay in there, including smells that may be left behind, or bacteria that may still be floating around somewhere in there.
plus, it just looks neater with it closed, and that would prevent anybody from accidentally dropping something in it. =D

Depends on where I am.
In a men's room at a business, I leave it up since that's the most common use.
At home, I put both seat and lid down so the cats don't drink from it.

If you live with a girl, leave it down. She wouldn't like to get up in the middle of the night and sit on the toilet only to discover the seat's up (it means a wet, cold surprise).

In my house both lids down-the flush splash factor (once I had a guest take a big dump and flush with the lid up-I threw away my toothbrush and disinfected everything else in the vicinity).
In someone else's house I leave it as I found it-after flushing with the lid closed.

depends: a guys house would be up and a womens house would be down. If a guy and girl live together the seat goes down. Lid dont matter but the seat should be down.

Probably should close the lid even before flushing. I saw a program on tv that showed how much splash happened with each flush. A special light showed traces of ''stuff'' on the walls and floor.
