In excel how can one lock a row from moving when you move along the sheet. I have a huge table with data and I need to have the table categories always visible

Go to the window tab at the top and click split

It will show up with a bar running up/down and one running across the sheet

Just move those where ever you need them and the go back to the window tab and click freeze panes... you can move them all the way to the top or left if you don't need one

That should get ya.

I've been using Excel for a long time also and I wouldn't use the split screen. It will do the job but not as cleanly as if you use Freeze panes.

Freeze panes works by freezing above and to the left of where you select.

So if you you want all of Rows 1 and 2 visible, then select Row 3 then from the Menu Bar click Window > Freeze Panes.

That will "freeze" those two rows so they are always visible.

If you wanted just Row 1 visible instead, you would just select Row 2 before freezing the panes. Basically it freezes whatever is above that row.

To freeze columns, just select the column to the right of the columns you want to freeze. Then select Window > Freeze Panes. So to freeze just Column A so it is totally visible, select Column B and freeze the window.

If you want to freeze both columns and rows, just select the cell to the bottom and right of what you want freezed. So to freeze Columns A and B and Row 1, I'd select cell C2 then go Window > Freeze Panes.

To undo the Freeze Panes, just go to Window > Unfreeze Panes.

The reason I recommend Freeze Panes over a split screen is because it's a lot less messy. You don't have all the bars to adjust. And you don't have the to worry about accidentally scrolling the wrong split screen. And those grey bars get annoying after a while I think. So for just keeping the table categories visible, I think Freeze Panes is much better.

I only use split screens for when I want to compare stuff from two far away sections side by side. Then I'll create a split screen. For example if I had something on row 200 and row 3000 and I wanted to compare the two rows side by side. In that instance a split screen would make more sense.

Yes. Go to Window --> Split Screen

It will cut the screen into 4 sections. Just drag the row one below the row you always want to show. You can drag the column one off the screen if you don't want a column to always show.

Then, go Window --> Freeze Panes to lock it in place.

If your first data is in value is in B1, and your second data value that you want divided into the first value is in B2, you would type the following in the cell of your choice: =B1/B2 And that's it :) Enjoy!
