Talk to him again.
Give him the HUSH look with a finger over your lips.
Put your finger in the other ear so you can hear the person on the phone.
Ask the person on the phone to please hold one moment, put the person on hold/mute, then sharply say to the coirker "please be quiet I am on the phone, stop being rude!" or similar comment..
Talk to a higher up.

The amor of hippos isn't trivial...notwithstanding this is form of ghastly to the uninitiated, for the hippo, that's what stable lovin' is, and this is eye-catching.

Put a roll of duct tape in your drawer. Next time he interrupts one of your calls: put the line on hold, hand him the tape and say "You seem to be having trouble keeping your mouth shut, maybe this will help".
Seriously, some people have to be hit over the head with a 2 by 4 to get it that their behavior is obnoxious. Especially if this guy is in his 50's.
It's kind of sad really that he never had a friend who cared enough to point out this annoying behavior to him in a nicer way, but his lack of social grace should not become your issue with which to deal.

I would say slap him but you might get fired.LOL So just IMAGINE SLAPPING HIM. Then after you've calmed down tell him I don't know what your problem is but I think that while were working you should conduct yourself in a business like manner if you think that your attitude is attractive or appealing you are sadly mistaken and if you don't stop I'm not going to have any choice but to report you. This will either snap him back to reality or find you highly attractive for being strong and standing up to yourself either way he'll respect you and that's what we all want right?

Wait until you get to work at the beginning of your day, then take him aside and tell him that his behavior is unacceptable. Make eye contact when you say it and keep a stern face. Ask him why he has such a bad habit. He may be doing it for attention or to sabotage your work. If he repeats his bad behavior later, cover the mouthpiece, then raise your voice and firmly tell him, "Down, boy, down!" That should embarrass him enough.

Tell him what he's doing is unprofessional and impolite. If he still does it, take it up with a supervisor and he'll do he can to make things more comfortable for the both of you

Well since you already went the "nice" route. And he is old enough to know better, stop being nice. Just come right out and tell him to "SHUT HIS FRIGGING PIE HOLE WHILE YOU ARE ON THE PHONE" if this doesn't work and if you are not his boss, go to his boss, if you are the boss, send his happy butt home.!!

Be straight forward. Just tell him he needs to wait that you can't hear when trying to talk to two at once.
