Hmmm, you could try bug spray, but cats can be pretty sensitive to that stuff. You'll just have to make sure you mop/vacuum the floor at least once or twice a week.

Get a shallow pan that is about 1-2 inches wider than the cats food bowl. Place the cats food bowl inside the pan and put water in the pan. The water creates a barrier so the ants wont get in the food bowl.
Get some ant bait traps to place around the area to kill the ants. Be careful if you use poison sprays, because this could harm the cats.

First thing is pick up the cat food dish and wash the floor surface to take away the chemical smells the ants leave to signal the presence of food. Then get something that is wider than the base of your cat food dish and deep enough to hold some water. Place the cat food dish in the center of that object--it can be anything, a plate, an old frisbee, anything as long as it will hold water. Then add water. They can't cross the water. Problem solved. But you do need to change the water pretty often cuz cat food will inevitably fall into it. And it shouldn't be so wide that the cat has trouble reaching her or his face over it to reach the food. And good luck.........

WHATEVER YOU DO- DON'T USE POISON OR PESTICIDES AROUND THE DISH!! The easiest thing to do is move the dish- usually up off the floor and in a different room- then close that room off if you decide to use pesticides- they are so dangerous to cats- even after they are dry- remove the food source and you'll get rid of the ants- I have a table that's just for my cats and they don't bother my table- also- I DON'T USE CAT DISHES- I use a sheet of wax paper (they only get wet food ,but you can do the same with dry food, only difference is that you have to measure out each meal, which is best anyway) and throw it away when they are finished eating- so no cat dish around for ants.
Good luck

I would start by finding where the ants are coming from (following the "trail" if there is one) and killing them at the source, then putting out some of those ant baits (some kind the cat can't get into). If you serve your cats wet food right now, dry food seems to be less attractive to ants (I've had ants in my kitchen before and they didn't go near my cat's kibble). Otherwise you may have to limit how long you leave the cat food sitting out or feed the cat only what it can eat in one sitting, several small meals per day.

DONT USE ANYTHING WITH POISON!
I dont know why anyone would suggest that!!
Cats clean their paws by washing them with their tounges thus ingesting anything that comes into contact with their paws!
Okay so here is what my mum does, Puts the food bowl in a larger bowl with water in it! EG- Use a ceramic bowl thats heavy and an old ice cream conatiner thats larger than the food bowl and fill it with water! That way the ants will drown before they can get to the food.
This is what my grandmother did put down flour or baby powder around the area but i wouldnt really reccomend that incase it licks the powder and gets sick but its worth a try.
This is what i do, I have a cat scratching post with a bit at the top that he can sit and sleep on, I put his food on that he just jumps up when he wants food & it also stops other cats from getting it to becase its near my front door they get scared when they hear people walking around the house and take off.
Try the water 1st or buy a scratching house :o)
Hope this helps :o)

the same thing happens to me
what I did I bought separate dishes
1 for water and 1 for food
then a got a larger dish where I can put one of those dishes
so I fill it up with some water not much and put the dish I am going to use for the food, this way I prevent ants getting into the food dish

=/ on that time there was no water on the dish at the moment but it gives you an idea
I also clean it up once in a while ^^

Remove the dish and clean up really well where you saw the ants. Maybe clean the area with bleach and water, and once it's dried put the dish back. Where are these ants coming from? Sounds like you have a major pest problem.

I had the same problem and to make matters worse my kitchen floor is carpet. I just picked everything up. Shampooed the carpet in that area. When it was dry I sprayed for the ants and then used a plastic mat I bought in the pet section at Walmart to set the food and water dishes on. Seems to have worked for me.

i have this problem one week out of the year...but during that week my house is loaded. i put ant poison around the house in places the cats cannot get to. then i put a teacup plate filled with water beneath the cats food dishes... the ants will climb up the dish...and into water, where they can not swim. it helps, so i hope this helps you!

follow the ant trail and put some ant rid (you buy it a the super market or hard ware.)near where the ants go in to the ground, you only need a couple of drops next day no more ant
or place your cats bowl on a plate or saucer of water. ants will drown trying to get in to cats food
