It's a ripe coconut, not young and not in the husk.

I tapped the equator with a heavy knife, I hit the equator on the edge of a brick wall, none of this worked. I finally gave up on getting two some what symmetrical sides, wrapped it in a towel and hit it with a hammer.

I know how to break it into PIECES but everything I looked up doesn't work and I'm afraid of saws.

I SAID that I ALREADY used the knife method. Good God!

Okay, the first link below is a "photo and description" of how to. It suggests something you didn't say you tried (nail and hammer). But I wouldn't "smash away" as the author suggests. Perhaps hitting firmly around the equator with a hammer (while coconut is in a towel) is enough. If you want to preserve the water inside, see link 2.

Link 2 shows a man breaking open a coconut very easily. It sounds like you tried this method, but perhaps you didn't hit it hard enough or with a meat cleaver? He hits very firmly with a cleaver. But if you did, then maybe you should try opening a coconut while it's still in the husk (by husk, I assume you mean the white fruit that surrounds the brown, hairy coconut shell). See links 3 and 4 for examples of how to do this. VERY INTERESTING!

Good luck!

If you look at the bottom side (the equator)of the coconut, there are three small dark circle, hold the coconut on the palm of your hand, make sure the small circles are at your thumb (either left or right hand), take a big knife (use it's back side please, not the sharp side) and whack on the side of the coconut, it will split in the middle.
what ever you do DONT hit on the small circle, it will make the coconut break to pieces.......
and please... make sure all the coconut juices didn't get to your clothes.... it will give a dark stained
Hope this help...

There is no easy way to crack the shell on the coconut, except use the blunt side of a knife and crack the shell on the "equator" as you put it. Hold the nut in your hand and just give the coconut a good hit to crack it. Be brave! Or, use a machete, outdoors, with the nut sitting on the ground, and just butcher it.

LOL @ "equator". I am killing myself after realizing what you meant by the word. Thanks for my laugh of the day.
why dont you just stick a hole through one of its holes? Why did you have to break it?
If you really need to cut itm remember to husk it first
A coconut has to be husked and only the shell will be left young or otherwise.
After that, I have seen them hit the "equator" with the board side of a heavy machete, or butcher knife. Even a small ax should do.Light knives wont do the job.
You have to hit hard and hear the "crack" of the shell.
when that happens you save the water that leaks through the cracks. Lots will get wasted so normally they punch a hole through its little natural thin areas and drain the water through that before you begin hitting the shell.

You can use a cork screw to drilling hole is the eyes. Drain the liquid, then tap around the equator with the blunt edge of a heavy knife. Be safe, don't just bang it around, tap around as many times as needed. Be patient, it will split open eventually.

Tap around the equator lightly with a hammer or the back of a cleaver, rotating it until the right spot.
It will neatly drop into two pieces.

ok heres how to do it. take a fork, a spoon, and a butter knife. then put them on the table. now go get a hammer, and a hacky sack, and set them on the table, next get a metal rod with is sharp and set it on the table. Next buy 3 packeges of saran rap and one pack of tinfoil. then go grab your blade from your blender and take it apart. Now look at all the freaking crap you got and try eveything. if that doeasnt work it yourself on the head with it as hard as you can, and if it doesnt work, keep hitting, Then if you knock yourself out you cant worry about it. If you wake up get your twenty two cal pistol and shoot it, with a bucket under neath it. There you go. That should do it.
