I keep seeing this fallacy today - that Hitler was an atheist - where in the names of all the gods did you get such crapola? he was a Catholic - and considered himself a good one, and did a lot of what he did in God's name.

Saloth Sar - also not an atheist, though he did advocate the ideals of socialism and communism.

Stalin is the only one you all have correct as an atheist.

Study your history before assuming that all the world leaders who do bad things were atheist.

Or should I pull out a list of religious world leaders and name their atrocities?

Dave B. - I also have a degree in history. Since all my books are still lingering in boxes, and this is after all, R&S, I didn't see a need to go beyond an easily accessed source.

Nega - never rely upon Wikipedia for anything. Even elementary schools will not accept it as a valid source.

d_mcull - sorry, darling - but I HAVE done the research - both on the Holocaust and Hitler, and on Stalin. regardless of it being his appeal to the public or his faith, the point of fact is pulling out these three ...dictators, for lack of better word currently as proof of atheism being evil is pure bullcrap and you know it.

My "rant" and you phrased it is based in knowledge and education - how about your refutation? hmmm? If you wish to prove me so wrong, where are YOUR citations?

ahh, and one citation, about how Hitler didn't like a Pope who did his job and tried to dissuade him doesn't make Hitler any less catholic - it's an article about Pope Pious,NOT Hitler. Try reading it yourself.

Even Stalin is debatable. At one point he was going to become a priest for his church, he was constantly saying this that didn't make sense about his religious beliefs. Stalin was just plain crazy.

Read up on Stalin on wiki or something.

here are a few quotes by Hitler:

"National Socialism and religion cannot exist together.... The heaviest blow that ever struck humanity was the coming of Christianity. "

"Christianity is a rebellion against natural law, a protest against nature. Taken to its logical extreme, Christianity would mean the systematic cultivation of the human failure."

"The best thing is to let Christianity die a natural death.... When understanding of the universe has become widespread... Christian doctrine will be convicted of absurdity.... Christianity has reached the peak of absurdity.... And that's why someday its structure will collapse.... ...the only way to get rid of Christianity is to allow it to die little by little.... Christianity [is] the liar.... We'll see to it that the Churches cannot spread abroad teachings in conflict with the interests of the State."

"The reason why the ancient world was so pure, light and serene was that it knew nothing of the two great scourges: the pox and Christianity."

"Originally, Christianity was merely an incarnation of Bolshevism, the destroyer.... The decisive falsification of Jesus' doctrine was the work of St. Paul. "

"Christianity is an invention of sick brains: one could imagine nothing more senseless, nor any more indecent way of turning the idea of the Godhead into a mockery."

"There is something very unhealthy about Christianity"

"I shall never come personally to terms with the Christian lie. Our epoch in the next 200 years will certainly see the end of the disease of Christianity.... My regret will have been that I couldn't... behold its demise."

Don't think Hitler could be considered a Catholic by any standard.

Hitler may have regarded himself as a Catholic, but that doesn't make him one.

I noted that the article you linked to lists no references whatsoever for all the claims that it makes. The article says catholic newspapers in Germany supported Hitler... I wonder why, I mean its not as if Hitler was the kind of guy to persecute and kill those who opposed his views...

How about you do some research of your own from a reputable source that lists its references. Such as this one which describes the true Catholic position with regard to Hitler. You'll note it has a detailed reference list which you can check to confirm the accuracy of the claims.

Oh and I'm not a Catholic by the way, I just can't stand this kind of ignorant rant with nothing to back it up.

>>> I do not claim that atheists are evil, and never have. My point is that you called Hitler a Catholic (which he clearly was not) and the article you provided (which contains no references) clearly conveys a mesage that the Catholic Church supported Hitlers views. I responded with an article which cites several references clearly showing that Hitler was not supported by the Church as your article claimed.

My point is not to argue that atheists are evil, but to show that the article you used has no basis, and that basing any opinion on it is foolish.

Hitler was raised Catholic but did not like the Catholic religion, or any religion for that matter. It is seen in how he had churches synagogues, and other religious places destroyed. His religion was that of the state which he was the head of. So yes technically he was Catholic but did not follow or prescribe to that or any religion. He was I believe a choir boy at one time during his young life. I looked at the website you have posted and it is very interesting yet seems to be extremely biased. When looking at this from a historical perspective the author of this text leaves out various reasoning as to why Hitler said what he said and was doing what he was doing. for example:
"In a Reichstag speech in 1938, Hitler again echoed the religious origins of his crusade. "I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty Creator. By warding off the Jews, I am fighting for the Lord's work.""
This was taken out of a speech he gave in 1938. This was very good. If you notice the times he most often referred to himself as a Catholic was during speeches and talking with others in groups. This is often used in order to gain favor from the crowd. I mean you don't want the people who you rule over to think you are not one of them and do not share their same beliefs. That would have been very, very bad in Hitler’s case. The majority of the German people were Catholic. So how do you make them feel more at ease with what you say, you make yourself sound like one of them. I ask that you take what you find on the web with a grain of salt. Look at noted historians and what their ideas and feelings are relating to this issue. Yes the Catholic Church did like Hitler at first. He was against communism, the truth is the United States and England and many other nations at first liked Hitler. He was going to be the bull dog that keep communism in check. It was not until he turned on them that reality sank in as to what he was really about. That was a rather interesting article, I did enjoy reading it. =)

Baloney. Hitler was born into a nominal Catholic family that didn't practice their faith. He personally rejected the faith at a very young age and lived his entire adult life as an atheist.
