A porcelain fused to metal crown has a metal substrate of some sort. On the inside and between teeth, where it doesn't show, the metal band is left as it is a better margin to adapt to the tooth. It is best if crown margins are above the gum line to prevent any future irritation. On the outside, where you can see, the metal is either cut out and porcelain is applied or the metal is covered with a thin band of porcelain. Sometimes, on back teeth the metal band isn't covered and it shows, other times it's sunk under the gum [bad thing!]. Long story short, don't worry about it OK?

Yes,it's the metal of your crown.Under the porcelain of your crown there is a metal base. After cleaning gums get healthy and shrink a little bit. That is when you see things like you did,or you see part of your Root. From now on,when you get a new crown in your mouth, ask for a porcelain margin. That way insted of that black line, there will be a matching white.Basically it won't show.

THIS VISIBLE DARK LINE IS THE METAL MARGIN SHOWING. NORMALLY THE GUMS COVER THIS, BUT SOMETIMES RECESSION CAUSES THIS MARGIN TO SHOW.
A NEW CROWN NEEDS TO BE MADE OR GUM SURGERY (GRAFT) NEEDS TO BE DONE TO COVER THE DARK LINE.
I ONLY PLACE CAPTEK CROWNS W/O EVER HAVING A DARK METAL MARGIN.
SPEAK TO YOUR DENTIST.
PS. ESTHETICS ARE THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THE DARK LINE
