in the U.S. anyway, it dates back to when women were nothing but trophies.. in colonial times, lots of women (the rich ones, who weren't working much around the house anyways) would never cut their hair, it would often be so long it would touch the ground... this was obviously not possible for men who were out riding around on horses and what not. around the time of the civil war, this started to change because women actually had to do things around the house (particularly in the south), and the luxury of having long hair was not an option. then with women's lib. in the early 20th century, the trend was toward being equal to men, and cutting hair all together to go as far against male ideals as possible (wearing pants and the bob were results of this trend...) and as you know, hair styles changed a lot throughout the century, until today when people pretty much do what they want

I think the theory, back in 1950 when guys all had short hair, was that they didn't need to look "touchable" but girls did. And also that guys were the working people, so they need to look serious, not sexy. Long hair also requires more care, so it was assumed that girls had time for that but boys did not.

Girls have long hair while boys have short one because God wants us to know If the person is a boy or girl..
