I am a beginning golfer and I notice that when allot of people talk about their game, they exxagerate the statistics or don't accurately report the right score. A ton of people who I talk to say that they drive the ball 310+ yards but when I watch them actually play, it only goes about 275 to just under 300. Also, they say they usually score in the high 70s or low 80s, however when we play their score is closer to high 90s or 100s. Why lie about a gentlemen's game?

Take what people say at face value.

I've hit a handful of drives over 300 yards in my days, but I only average about 250 yards off the tee.

To translate this to be on yahoo answers:
" I hit my 3 iron about 250 yards, and average about 300+ off the tee"

It's all bull, I doubt there are a dozen people out of a thousand who average anywhere near 300 yards off the tee.

I'm not talking about the Joe-Sports-Idiot who wears a Bud Lite tank-top to the range, swinging his $500 driver as fast as he can (Making solid contact about 5% of the time, with a nasty slice).

Golf is a sport. I think the "gentlemen's game" thing probably came from Overseas. Here in America, we are very competitive, and have no tale shortages of 'The fish that got away', etc..

Golf is considered a gentleman's game because it is a game where you are out there by yourself. If you ever play in a tournament you'll realize how easy it would be to cheat. Besides the people in your group no one is watchin you. There isn't a ref out there to call your penalties or count your score.
Example: You set up to your ball in the rough. You place your club behind it and the ball moves. This is a penalty. But nobody knows, nobody saw it but you. A true golfer will call the penalty on themself. That's why it is considered a gentleman's game

Golf is not really a gentleman's game. It may have been at one time. Bobby Jones's name is linked to the title. I play Sunday golf and see drunken slobs do ugly things on the golf course. I see people not rake after leaving a bunker. I hear people swear and bang their clubs. People do not repair marks on the greens. I think we have a misnomer here. Even the dress codes and basic etiquette are ignored.

I guess I'm fortunate. I'm in a men's league and I'd say that 90% of the guys in our leage play the sport like it's supposed to be played and follow course ettiquette. Don't get me wrong......we still have some idiots out there, but the majority of the guys are honest.
