ok for those answered sofar, those are obvious reasons, but i wonder why we don't solve these problems, equipment malfunction is inexcusable and better countermeasures for rpgs and other attacks should be employed, but why arent they

jeepers-I am sure that if the military committed itself into solving these problems directly, these so called natural equipment problems wouldn't be so natural and we can find ways to counter rpgs...

Two words. "Lowest Bidder."

Not to mention the military is seriously under-funded. Thank your congressmen for that. Your average car gets more maintenance than most military equipment.

Equipment malfunctions are inexcusable ??

Do you know any equipment anywhere that is 100% ?

Most people just don't have any idea, just how many flight hours that helicopters are flying in iraq and the conditions that they are flying in.

And how do you have a counter measure for an RPG ?

You point it and shoot, there is nothing to counter, its not like an RPG is a missile that has sensors.

You cannot put chicken wire on a helicopter to detonate it early, like you can a vechicle.

Just to give an example, in Vietnam 3,305 helicopters were lost. That was out of 11,827 helicopters that flew in Vietnam.

Three reasons

Equipment malfunction- The desert is especially hard on vehicles. Dust gets in rotors, parts, engines everything. That can be fatal.

Easy to hit- They can't move like a jet, are slow and sluggish, and are easy to see, plus since they have so many moving parts, losing one is a lot more serious.

Altitude- Falling a thousand feet with no way to arrest your fall usually kills anybody

its not all RPG's causing the helicopters to crash most US helicopters were designed for fighting a war in the european theater during the cold war. They were not designed to fight the war in the desert with the Sand. While they are adjusting and making improvments they are very expensive and wont happen over night.

Gravity, night flying accidents, Pilot Error, if all the gadgets and upgrades were put into helicopters EVEN if they exsisted the birds would never get off the ground.

They are noisy and venerable to attack. Inadequate techniques of cover fire, poor ground troop deployment and over confidence are the problem. Poor and misleading training as well, troops instead of been alert are relaxes and not at the ready to engage and often try use suppressing fire instead of direct fire.
