Just for a moment of rationality here -- though why I bother I don't know.
Tobacco wasn't known to the Europeans, Asians, or Africans (unless you buy into a story of a small pack of it found in some ancient tomb - which I've never actually been able to find the proof of) until Columbus bumped into the Americas and until tobacco was taken back in about the early 16th century of the common era.
As for smoking anything else? Who knows? Hemp was known to the ancient world.

there is the the claim that the ointment of royalty was made of marijuana oil olive oil and Cinnamon but that was from the ingredients in Hebrew where they talk of cannibus which later was translated into flowering sticks . also note that leprosy as in Hansen's disease is treated effectively with marijuana resin. many claim is the apostles really existed they were the physicians of those times . just conjecture at this point but most of what is said is .
