Less than one percent of the prison population are atheists. The overwhelming majority of course being christians.
How do christians explain this?
Since atheists are supposedly immoral heathens.

Even though there are less atheists, still the proportion is obviously off. Even for the smaller percent of atheists in the country there are an even smaller amount of atheists in prison.
And especially you always hear the argument of how atheists aren't moral because they don't believe in god. IF that were true wouldn't it make the percent of atheists in america in prison than christians?

13 % of the population in america are atheist or nonreligious, less than 1 percent of the prison is atheist.
Obviously a big difference.

Christians explain this by willfully misunderstanding it, or lying about it. Examples of such behavior can be seen in this very thread. That and the classic tactic of saying those aren't REAL christians (a cop-out non-christians aren't allowed to use).
Note that the percentage of atheists in prison is LESS than the percentage of atheists in the general population. If atheists were exactly as moral as others, then the percentages would be equal. If atheists were LESS moral than others, as pseudo-christians claim, then there would be a greater percentage of atheists in prison than in the general population. Neither of these is the case.
And "there are no atheists in foxholes" is a myth too. Don't take my word for it, ask the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers, a group whose very existence disproves the myth.

Are you saying people are either atheists or Christians? Just because someone believes there is a God does not make them a Christian! Many people believe but have never asked Jesus into their lives and be forgiven of sins. Even if they have- religions differ, but I do not believe in once saved always saved. If a Christian returns to a life full of sin, and isn't asking to be forgiven when makes mistakes, and is knowingly living sinful- Well, I know Bible says God can not stand sight of sin.

you have huge holes on your reasoning. first Atheism isn't the fourth suitable faith. It makes up the fourth suitable faith alongside with the various 3 listed. i ought to dare say that of those 4 groops that atheism is basically 2 %.. This givies credence to the reality that Atheists are truly .2% of the detention center inhabitants. the comparable would desire to be stated for human beings named Dave. If there arn't that many around then there heavily isn't that a great style of a sampling no count variety variety the situation yuo take it. Divorce expenses...i ought to opt to artwork out the situation you acquire your stats, in spite of the undeniable fact that the suitable ones I pointed out located divorce at 40 six% no count variety variety the situation you look. Convicetd rapists... That stat has to do with prohibition and that's psychological outcomes. Now, i does now not say you (atheists) are undesirable human beings, and that i think of of that's obtainable for atheists to be extra effective ethical than any christian.

It's difficult for me to understand as well. You watch gangster movies or Mafia movies and some people in them are pretty darn religious, even though they do serious criminal stuff on a regular basis. Even Osama starts every other sentence with God bless or God willing.
Then you've got morally good people who just don't believe in God, but they follow all the laws and rules, are happy to help others, and aren't critical of people who follow religion. IMO, I don't have a problem with someone not believing in God as long as they are morally good people. I definitely much prefer them to gangsters who commit crime wearing crosses or praying to God to let them succeed in their wrong-doing.
As for Bibles in prison, many jails have redemption programs where they try to get the offenders to read the bible, believe in God and learn to live without committing crime. I think it helps some of the criminals change their ways.

I would be interested to see the study that concluded that. I would also be interested to see how many of the test subjects converted to Christianity while in prison. Would you please provide a link to the study that provided these statistics?
Edit: au_catboy, thanks for the links. However, neither of your links provide the original study, nor do they list how many converted while serving time.

1st of all just cause they fix their mouth to call themselves Christians certainly dont mean it. Christians are suppose to show good fruit, if they are in jail they obviously didn't show good fruit. there is a difference in believing in God and serving Him. so many ppl claim to be Christians and a couple hrs later stealing from a convenient store. please! dont believe everything you hear, actions speak louder then words.

it is proportionate to the populations of Christians to Atheists but I still think you are right the more successful Atheists are less likely to require crime and are generally well educated beyond it .

Wrong.
Many of the Blacks are Muslims. Get your facts straight and stop being so PC. BLACKS make up most of the prison population.
Anyone in PRISON for a violent crimes is NOT religious to any faction, expecially Christain.
They are just giving LIP SERVICE
like their line of BS that they are INNOCENT.
Do you think they're INNOCENT!

Check the prison stats in Muslim countries, Hindu countries, or atheist countries. When Americans are always
"Christian" by default, does it really surprise you to see higher numbers of them in prisons?

Uhh, has it ever dawned on you that people can label themselves anything they want?
Christianity, if you listen to its creator Jesus Christ, is about love and compassion.
Anyone can label themselves 'Christian'.
