It's got to be the428 Cobra Jet, that's what they used in the Shelby version : )

or then there's the Boss 302, and oh ya, the Boss 429

If you want room under the hood after the install I would maybe think about the 302 same as the 5.0 HO, 351W are all the same block and bolt in. You can find these engines in newer Ford & Mercs today. Great engine with loads of power if you want it.

The big block 390 and 428 are all the same family of engines and a good 390 has about 330 hp. Not a lot of room once you mount them in. the FE engines include 390 410merc 427 & 428. These would all fit but factory would be 390 or 428.

The 429 & 460 and the same block and some 69 70 stangs had 429's. You just better make sure you have the gears and trans to support these engines as you would with all big blocks.

For being pratical I suggest the 351W with a few goodies to beef it up, you will have more room and the car would be lighter.

Either way have fun with it and do it right the first time.

The 390 was a dog compared to the 351. It is heavier than a 351, and the 351 can be made to run just as fast, if not faster than the 390. Like mentioned, the 428 would be a great motor to drop in, but for practicality, and ease of finding parts the 351W is a best pick. My '70 SportsRoof has it's original 351W in it, with bigger cam and Holley, and even with that basic combo it pulls hard and will smoke the tires any day.

If money is no object then a 351 Windsor would be my advice. If you want to budget a bit then a 302 will make her move good too! These are both great motors but love to eat timing chains so make sure you put a double roller on there. Good luck!

Having a 69 with a 351W, I think the 351C would be the better engine to build. It's a dependable motor, produces gobs of horsepower, and parts are readily available

you,ll get more performance from the 351 in it,those can be built to be real good engines, and in those cars they run good, the mustangs weren't very heavy, good luck with it.
