What is the reason that there are protests against the Super Ferry? You would think that easy access to the Islands at a reasonable price would be a good thing. Tahiti's ferrys are nice and appear to cause no problems. they are inexpensive and very effective. Is this something that the Airlines are promoting because the Ferry will take business away from them?

My son lives on Maui. They don't want the ferry for several reasons. The biggest are; protecting the reefs and ocean environment. There are very, very strict rules in place concerning ocean going vessels docking or anchoring in Maui. The number of vessels is tightly regulated to prevent environmental impact. The ferry system would disrupt the regulations in place.

The second reason, they are not the least bit interested in a huge influx of tourists. Maui is a beautiful place with minimal development and tourist impact. That's the way they want to keep it.

My son said it is going to get nasty if plans proceed. The Native Hawaiians can and will impose treaty rights if they have to, to prevent it.

Various reasons. Some have environmental concerns, that the ships would interfere with whales and other marine life, and would foul the waters in other ways.

Some islanders (esp. Maui) don't want to open up the island to the kind of dense tourist traffic that the main island has.

It's not coming from the airlines; the way the island-hopping airlines are cutting their prices lately (go! airlines has a $1 fare!), the ferry would be much more expensive--from what I've read, about $60.

That giant ferry has a huge impact on the surrounding environment....one that Hawaii is very protective of.....and one that the surfers are the front line defense of. As a tourist, super ferry, great idea. As a Hawaiian(which Im not), WAY too much risk to the habitat there to save some rich *** tourist a few bucks by shuttling their cars around from island to island.

Well the given reason is that proper environmental review was not done and there is concern the ferries will harm whales and pollute the ocean. But, yeah maybe the airlines have a hand in it.

I think it's a combination of the local airlines not wanting it, and environmental impact that hasn't quite been approved of or analyzed fully.
