Good question. There is disagreement amongst Christians about Paul's admonition regarding women covering their head. But both sides still believe the bible to be the word of God. It is a matter of interpretation.

And, yes, some Christian women still practice head-covering.

god bless

I do not believe that the Bible is the word of God, the women in my Church do cover their heads, and I have never attacked a Muslim for anything.

The only mention in the Bible I know that comes close to women to cover their head is their face being covered by their long hair when they bow their head to pray. I'm not interested or believe in the Quran to be the word of God to trust any of it's messages.

The New Testament of the Christian Bible says that women should cover their heads when they pray or prophesise.

It does not say their head must be covered any other time.

Christian ladies who practice headcovering do not believe it is essential to one's salvation, it is just something they voluntarily do as a sign of respect and reverence.

Salvation is a free gift of God and made possible through the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

To cover in obedience to scripture is not an attempt to earn one's way into Heaven; and to decide not to cover is not going to send any woman who has accepted God's free gift of salvation to Hell.

If Muslim women choose to cover themselves from head to foot then that is their business, but if men force them to then that is a different matter and should be condemned.

I don't attack any woman for covering their head.

There are many rules in the Bible that Christians believe no longer apply now that Messiah has come and provided a new relationship with God. One of those rules is that women should cover their head. Of course, not all Christians believe this. Some still cover their head for that very reason, and, historically the uncovered head has been relatively recent, especially for church services. It's only been in the last 50 years or so that Christian women have been uncovering their head in church services. And like I said there are denominations that still practice this.

In some churches Christian women do cover their heads. In other churches they believe that the passage from 1 Cor 11 has a cultural context that is not applicable to Christian women around the world. There is certainly nothing spiritual about a woman having her head covered or a man having his head uncovered.

As to why someone might look down on the Muslim practice of women covering their heads I think that it has to do with that practice being enforced, sometimes brutally, with the women involved having no say so about whether or not they want to conform to that tradition.

As to the first, I can honestly say that I do not know the answer to that. It never says you must have your head covered at all times, but it does make mention of covering your head while praying, so I don't know why we don't do that in church anymore. I do know that Catholic women up until Vatican II had some sort of head covering in church, but after that they did not; I presume some decision was made at Vatican II that allowed us not to have our heads covered anymore. Something about it not being essential for salvation.

Personally I have no problem with Muslim women covering their heads. If a woman wants her head covered, it's her head, not mine.

Read in context of what Paul was addressing when he wrote 1 Corinthians 11 this makes perfect sense. You see in Corinth, "the matter of wearing hats or head coverings, although seemingly insignificant, had become a big problem because two cultural backgrounds were colliding. Jewish women always covered their heads in worship. for a woman to uncover her head in public was a sign of loose morals. On the other hand, Greek women may have been used to worshiping without head coverings....Paul told the women who were not wearing head coverings to wear them, NOT BECAUSE IT WAS A SCRIPTURAL COMMAND, BUT BECAUSE IT KEPT THE CONGREGATION FROM DIVIDING OVER A PETTY ISSUE THAT SERVED ONLY TO TAKE PEOPLE'S MINDS OFF CHRIST."

Hope this is helpful

It is true that the Bible tells us to cover our heads in this Scripture...
1 Corinthians 11:5-6
But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

But when you read the whole chapter, just a few verses down, it says this...
1 Corinthians 11:15
But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

Meaning that our hair is our covering for our head.

As I understand it, covering heads was cultural - not a mandate from Christ. I think people should be able to dress however they like, however their culture requires. What I tend to object to, as a western woman, is seeing women forced to wear birkas (not sure of the spelling) completely covering their faces in 100 degree heat, being beaten by men for not doing so - that's what I object to - women treated worse than dogs. It's what we see in things like "Under the Veil" and what we hear from women who have escaped from places like the Taliban-ruled parts of Afghanistan.

How have I attacked Muslim women? In the US - what women wear - from being completed covered to nearly naked seems to be a matter of choice. When you say "you attack" in your question - aren't you lumping me with everyone else? There will always be unthinking morons out there that need to find someone to pick on - and they usually pick on someone who looks different from them. But, I am not them.

(BTW - I couldn't find the scripture that says that women should cover their heads in the New Testament, perhaps it's in the historical parts of the Old Testament - could you please post the book, chapter, and verse - thanks.)
