There are actually 2 beasts in revelation. The beast is possesed by the spirit that dwells within the serpent (the very same one who tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit). Now, this beast has a number wich must appear on a person's right hand or forehead in order to buy and sell things. Those who remained faithful to God did not posses this mark, however was punished by the beast. The number of the beast is 666.
Revelation 13: 16-18
THE BEAST FORCED ALL THE PEOPLE, SMALL AND GREAT, RICH AND POOR, SLAVE AND FREE, TO HAVE A MARK PLACED ON THEIR RIGHT HANDS OR THEIR FOREHEADS. NO ONE COULD BUY OR SELL WITHOUT THIS MARK, THAT IS, THE BEAST'S NAME OR THE NUMBER THAT STANDS FOR THE NAME.
THIS CALLS FOR WISDOM. WHOEVER IS INTELLIGENT CAN FIGURE OUT THE MEANING OF THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST, BECAUSE THE NUMBER STANDS FOR THE NAME OF SOME ONE. ITS NUMBER IS
666.

Well, currently, the proposed identity chip is the "mark of the beast" because apparently in the bible it says that there will come a day when a computerized identity chip will be placed under the skin of all satan worshippers.
Oh, it doesn't actually say that? So it's just another vague generalization to be filled in later then.....my bad.

A visible sign to everyone that you have agreed to take. It will allow one to buy and sell. By accepting this mark you will also be pledging your allegiance to the antichrist and thus seal your fate in hell with him.
We don't know exactly what the mark is but many have speculated that it is the actual number 666, or a microchip, or our ss #. When the time is here we WILL have a choice to make. It is NOT something that is already assigned to us like our SS#, we have to choose to take it.

As all the disciples were tortured to death for claiming what they saw with their own eyes, Jesus risen from the dead in the flesh, John survived boiling in oil and received an amazing prophecy regarding the endtimes.
An charismatic man (Islam's supposed hero the 12th Imam) will rule for the last 7 years of world history known as the tribulation. (yes, the globe is going to get very warm indeed) This man will cause there to be one world religion and one world economic system. In order to participate in this society, everyone will have to take the mark of this man so that they can buy and sell. But those who trust this Antichrist make themselves enemies of God and incur His wrath.

Satanists, apocalypse watchers and heavy metal guitarists may have to adjust their demonic numerology after a recently deciphered ancient biblical text revealed that 666 is not the fabled Number of the Beast after all.
A fragment from the oldest surviving copy of the New Testament, dating to the Third century, gives the more mundane 616 as the mark of the Antichrist.
Ellen Aitken, a professor of early Christian history at McGill University, said the discovery appears to spell the end of 666 as the devil’s prime number.
“This is a very nice piece to find,” Dr. Aitken said. “Scholars have argued for a long time over this, and it now seems that 616 was the original number of the beast.”
The tiny fragment of 1,500-year-old papyrus is written in Greek, the original language of the New Testament, and contains a key passage from the Book of Revelation.
Where more conventional versions of the Bible give 666 as the “number of the beast,” or the sign of the anti-Christ whose coming is predicted in the book’s apocalyptic verses, the older version uses the Greek letters signifying 616.
“This is very early confirmation of that number, earlier than any other text we’ve found of that passage,” Dr. Aitken said. “It’s probably about 100 years before any other version.”
“When we’re talking about the early biblical texts, we’re always talking about copies and they are copies made, at best, 150 to 200 years after [the original] was written,” she said.
“They can have mistakes in the copying, changes for political or theological reasons … it’s like a detective story piecing it all together.”
Dr. Aitken said, however, that scholars now believe the number in question has very little to do the devil. It was actually a complicated numerical riddle in Greek, meant to represent someone’s name, she said.
“It’s a number puzzle — the majority opinion seems to be that it refers to [the Roman emperor] Nero.”
Revelation was actually a thinly disguised political tract, with the names of those being criticized changed to numbers to protect the authors and early Christians from reprisals. “It’s a very political document,” Dr. Aitken said. “It’s a critique of the politics and society of the Roman empire, but it’s written in coded language and riddles.”

A "mark" in Greco-Roman culture was a tattoo that was used to identify slaves. The mark of the beast is a literary device used to contrast the servants of evil with the servants of God (who are 'sealed' with a similar mark in their foreheads).

The mark of the beast is the opposite of God's number which is 777 and that is going to be given to the 144,000 who are saved during the time of the rapture. those aren't the people who are going to disappears but they will find out that Jesus is Lord by then. At least that's how I understand it.

Yes I can, but don't have the space here. See www.revelado.org/666.htm
Bad times are coming, the earth will go through its dying throes, and many will find out too late, that they were serving self rather than others and the Lord.
Shalom, peace in Jesus, Ben Yeshua
