"The federally-controlled National Guard as we know it was officially created in 1916; however, the heritage of the National Guard traces back to English common law and the citizen militias of the British North American colonies." - Wikipedia

Pretty true. The National Guard evolved from state militias. Back in colonial days these were armies supported by only the states. After the Mexican-American War the US did away with a all volunteer army and manned a permanent one. But the states fought and were allowed to keep their militias, now today known as the National Guard. Now the government can call them up, such as Bush as done in Iraq, but it needs a reason and the sate's leadership has final says in if they can go or not. Hope it helps.

That TV ad is right. A few years ago they cased the colors of a Guard unit in Massachusetts that traced its history back to the Battle of Lexington and Concord during the American War For Independence.

The Constitution allowed for the formation of state militias for their common defense. Before that, most colonies had militias to fight Indians. 300 years is quite possible since the first successful colonies were founded in the 1620s.
