I'm 42 and these are my first glasses. I have problems with my distance vision, astigmatism, and close vision. My doctor said I should wear my glasses all the time. She said I might want progressive lenses but wasn't really sure I needed them. She said I should discuss that with the gal who sells the glasses in the outer office.

I talked about it with the glasses gal and said that I had troubles with my near vision but not terrible (mostly double vision). She said the normal lense would help that. So I got normal glasses for the distance and astigmatism.

Today I got my glasses and everything closer than 5 feet is very blurry. I have to take off my glasses to read the guages on my car, etc. They make my vision much worse. So I can't wear them all the time. I mentioned this to the gal and she said "Well you didn't select the progressive lens". What do I do?

Also when I move my head around with them on everything distorts (expands and contracts) like I'm on acid.

Don't take anymore acid. The distortion is caused by your astigmatic correction & that will clear up in a few days. Take the glasses back. They did not advise you properly! You obviously need bifocals. Progressive lenses are the best option, specially if you can't read the gauges in the car. You can either go with a no-line progressive or a lined tri-focal to be able to see clearly at close range, intermediate (arms length to 5 feet) and distance. They should exchange them with some additional cost to you.

Take them back. I have never heard of an instance where they will not change them for you. Progressives do cost more, so they probably will charge you for the difference. I have worn progressives for about 30 years now, maybe longer. I wouldn't be able to see without them. I always get mine at Sears, just put them on, and wear them. First time may take you some time to get used to them. I wouldn't wear any other kind.

Sounds like you need bi- focals. Your eye doctor should have been the one to tell you that you needed bi- focals and wrote this on the prescription for your lens's. The term progressive applies to no line bi- focals. This is going from one magnification and transitioning to the next magnification. This does this without an abrupt change as there is with lined bi- focals. The Acid trip will be over as soon as your eyes adjust to the glasses. Thanks for the flashback, Happy Trails

I personally think you should take them back, if you can, and go to another optometrist. I have glasses, and everything is fine for me. Maybe you don't need the 'normal' type. Are you OK reading with/without them?
