Winter is coming up and that means days with overcast. When its sunny outside I instantly feel slightly more happy inside, but when its cloudy, I feel kinda bummed or just like the day is just blahhhh. What can I do to make myself feel more joyous on these day ahead.

And no mention of pills, its not that serious.

some people suffer a certian type of depression(not neccasarily extreme) due to lack of light. you need to get more light. there is a lamp that helps, i don't know all the information on it, but i feel the same way you do, i'm less happy during the winter months. also, try to get out and do more with friends, and exercise.

As an animal behaviorist, I often look to the animal world for clues to human behavior. Most animals get active when sunlight perceived by the photoreceptotors of the retina stimulate the pituitary gland to start producing hormones. This kick starts your systems. Think about how when the days get short animals start to hibernate. The research on light perception is so well studied that we can actually get animals out of a hibernative state by flashing light on them for one hour at an unusual time(say 10:00pm) and they will come out of hibernation sooner.

I would try making your bedroom as dark as possible when you sleep. Cover all windows and skip the night light. I mean , make it really, really dark. This is so your body is going to get really really rested.... Remember, it is light that stimulates, so any light in the room will keep you stimulated even if you are asleep. Then during the daytime, try to get as much light in the house as possible. I would also try placing some "grow lite" light bulbs (these light bulbs are available anywhere that sells houseplants) around the house. The grow lites simulate the light spectrum of sunlight and can trick your body into that hormone kick start.

I don't know if you know this...but the reason you get that "bummed" sensation when it's not sunshine outside, but overcast is because of the barametric pressure. it causes ur body to feel tired and sometimes even depressed. the best advice i can give you is to keep yourself busy and overcome the dreaded barometric pressure syndrome. think about positive things and you'll get through. hope this advice helps your overcast days

When it is cloudy or rainy, the atmospheric pressure drops. A lot of people experience depression when that happens. You need to effect a positive attitude at those times. Look for the good side of everything. If nothing else, it will keep people confused.

Sun absorption into the skin produces vitamin D. When you have extended days without sunshine, you have a vitamin D deficiancy. You need to balance your diet whit a higher source of this vitamin. Use the link below to give you a listing of Vitamin D sources without medical intervention.
