The Bible doesn't say that the universe is a few thousand years old, actually...and since it doesn't say that, no change will be made.

And besides that, it's the Word of God. Changing and altering it? Nothin' doin'...

The Bible nor people know how old the earth is but we can get a fairly accurate assesment on the 7 day creation period.

There are alot of time periods talked about in the the Bible. you have a 24hr period then you have weeks of years, days of weeks, the times period and the 7 times period and creative days of time period.

When creating the earth we are talking about 7 creative days. So how do we find out how long one creative day is?

We have to go back to Gods word the Bible to find out. Gods passing of time is not the same as mans.
At 2 Peter 3:8 It says " That one day is with Jehovah as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day.

So here God is giving some insight as to time elements compared to man.

So if a thousand years were to go by for mankind it would only be about one day or so for God. Not to be taken literally as one day but he is just giving us a period of time that we might beable understand in our mere human minds. But given that information we can reasonably say that the first creative day was at least one thousand years long. Therefore the earth would have been created in at least 365 thousand years plus. That would go more along the lines scientifically. Also you notice that God rested on the seventh day . He did not stop his creative seventh day but rested, and he is still resting because we do not yet see the end of that day. So we are now living in the day of whats called" Gods Day of Rest "

So what is he waiting for you migt ask?
For his Kingdom to take over earths affairs.
very soon Da 2:44. To be controlled by his son Jesus Christ as King sitting at the right hand of his father Jehovah.

Once that Kingdom takes effect and the thousand years is over Gods Kingdom comes to an end and the earth now is the paradise that it was originally intended for , with all diserving humans inhabiting the earth
and given everlasting life. And the kingdom turned back to his father then the seven days will have ended Rev 21:3,4. If you want more information I will be glade to
send you some.
Sincerely yours,
Fred M. Hunter

The Bible doesn't say an age for the Earth, just that God created the Heavens and Earth in 7 days. This brings rise to the philosophical questions for Christians- What is a day to God? How did God create the heavens and Earth? There is a theory once called Scientific Creationism, now called intelligent design. It postulates that God working in the bounds of physical laws set in motion the process in which life was formed on earth.

Hello, B: In a sense they have already done that. You see, most translations in the 1800's had dates posted in the marjins of most chapters. For example: Genesis 1:1 had 4004 B.C. printed there.

However, seems almost all Christians believe in "theistic evolution". That is, God assisted in mutating His original creation over a period of millions of years. Also, about 10 years ago Pope John Paul II said evolution is a satisfactory way to teach origions.

New discoveries are changing things. Polonium halos in basement granite show an instant creation during neucleosyntheis (see: www.halos.com). And physicists show that the speed of light is decreasing exponentually, and extrapolated to its max, puts it back to the 4004 that was in the marjins.

A Bible code proves Jesus was born exactly when the Bible says he would be, and supports Creation. See: http://abiblecode.tripod.com

I understand that the Bible is a revelation from our infinite Creator, and it is self-authenticating and self-attesting. I must interpret Scripture with Scripture, not impose ideas from the outside! When I take the plain words of the Bible, it is obvious there was no death, bloodshed, disease or suffering of humans or animals before sin. God instituted death and bloodshed because of sin—this is foundational to the Gospel. Therefore, one cannot allow a fossil record of millions of years of death, bloodshed, disease and suffering before sin (which is why the fossil record makes much more sense as the graveyard of the flood of Noah’s day).
Also, the word for ‘day’ in the context of Genesis can only mean an ordinary day for each of the six days of Creation.
Thus, as a ‘revelationist,’ I let God’s Word speak to me, with the words having meaning according to the context of the language they were written in. Once I accept the plain words of Scripture in context, the fact of ordinary days, no death before sin, the Bible’s genealogies, etc., all make it clear that I cannot accept millions or billions of years of history. Therefore, I would conclude there must be something wrong with man’s ideas about the age of the universe.

Why would any Christian want to take man’s fallible dating methods and use them to impose an idea on the infallible Word of God? Christians who accept billions of years are in essence saying that man’s word is infallible, but God’s Word is fallible! This is the crux of the issue. When Christians have agreed with the world that they can accept man’s fallible dating methods to interpret God’s Word, they have agreed with the world that the Bible can’t be trusted. They have essentially sent out the message that man, by himself, independent of revelation, can determine truth and impose this on God’s Word.

Sorry. The Bible does not give the age of the universe. That is just some people's interpretation of how old the universe is based on their method of calculating that age from the Bible. But many Christians believe they are wrong. I don't believe the world is only 6000 year old or however old they say. However, I am not convinced that science has the number right either.

It doesn't say that. Just one example of the wacko biblical interpretations you can come up with when you have no authority other than yourself guiding your interpretations. All Christians use the same Bible and most Christians don't arrive at such absurd beliefs.

Probably when those who ask questions like this figure out that the bible is not a historical narrative and to read it in that fashion is the letter that kills, taking figurative esoteric stories as though they were literal. Especially considering how allegorical the creation story is.

If I gave you the Gnostic Creation story, I would hope you would read them in the context of what was meant,

G.R.S. Mead entitled Fragments of a Faith Forgotten, this explanation is put forth: “…what the Gnostics projected onto the screen… [in the form of a ] picture of the universe was in reality a picture of their own minds. Its mythology is a symbolic portrayal, almost a deliberate one, of the forces which operate in the structuring and evolution of the human personality”.
