As a fairly new atheist, whats the best way to try and stop saying phrases such as
"Oh my God"

"Jesus"

"Holy Shoot(you get the idea there)"

It is a bit disturbing how deeply set in religious undertones are set in in this supposedly secular society.

Mrs OG, you don't claim to be a tolerant Christian, do you?

I respect your faith, respect my choices as well. Stop being a fascist.

Don't even worry about it. Changing isn't necessary. I'm sure all of the other atheists won't hold it against you if you say those things.

Why stop?

Saying "Gordon Bennett" or any of the other euphemisms is just making a noise when you are happy/angry/surprised. Why stop making the noise you are used to.

Yelling
"Oh my outmoded belief system in an omnipotent anthropomorphic personification"

When you are surprised takes to long and will just confuse people.

Although I do tend to say "gesundheit" (good health) when people sneeze rather than "bless you".

well, you see it as a problem, that's good, most people don't see how language affects the mind subconsciously (how can you have a god you don't believe in?) but i find that when i have a phrase i don't want to say, I just chastise myself whenever i realize i say it... it's kind of crazy, but it really works... i tell myself that it's not right, that i need to stop, and it usually only takes a week per phrase!

Try to turn oh my god's into oh my goodness or just oh my....
An Atheist can say Jesus...it is usually interpreted as oh **** anyway.....
My advice as a long time agnostic is try not to sweat the small stuff. Life is too short especially as an atheist ;)

Say what you want to say. I have stopped cussing because I am now around younger children - so I feel it necessary "Well, go-osh darn it". "God-sh darn" You will sound cheesy, but it will break the habit.

And I know a lot of atheists - and they all use the
"Lord's" name in vain...because they don't care.

Who cares?? Besided you are an athiest right? So you have no need to STOP Saying those words. It's the christians that aren't allowed to take the lords name in vain.

I guess you only have to worry about taking the Lord's name in vain if you actually believe in Him. Those who believe in God should never say things like that anyway. So since you do not believe - doesn it really matter who you curse?
