Ice your arm first. That will numb it up.
No worries :)

I am scared of needles too and unless you are getting a spinal tap or a lumbar puncture, they don't give you anything to numb up the area before giving you the shot.
My fear of needles is the same as yours (down to the crying and the screaming when getting the shot), but I have found that if you have something to distract you (such as a really good book in the opposite hand from the arm that you are getting the shot in i.e., if you're getting the shot in your right arm, holding the book in your left hand and you are reading it, then you'll be so focused on reading your book that you won't even feel the shot at all.
Another thing that works well (although it's not as effective as a good book) is to distract yourself by rolling a coin over your fingers as you are getting the shot.
Of course, any kind of a distraction from the shot itself is always effective and the 2 ideas that I brought up are NOT the only ways in which you can distract yourself when getting a shot - use your imagination, in terms of a distraction from the injection.

Many people have a genuine fear of needles, however the way you have described your fear does seem that it is very serious. I have had numerous injections, but the anxiety just before a shot is always there. Rubbing ice over the site has somone earlier suggested could help but unless you keep the ice for a long period of time, i doubt it would be very effective. This is what i do. Relax the arm where you are going to get the injection. Straining it could just make worse has your muscles would be tensed. Instead grip your other hand tightly or hold somthing tightly with your other hand. Concentrate on the grip. This would help divert your attention from the injection itself. Close your eyes if you really have to. Before you know it, it will be all over. Just remember, take it easy and relax.

Burn-Gel Plus Wal-Mart about $5.00. I don't understand why when our society has something that kills shot pain, it isn't marketed as such.
BGP contains Lidocaine which is the strongest pain killer available. You can get products with more Lidocaine over the Internet.
Apply BGP to the shot area two hours before the shot so it has plenty of time to numb. You can do it the day before to test it out and relieve your anxiety. If you only have a half-hour, it won't completely numb, but it will provide some relief. Then you cover it with kitchen wrap so it doesn't get all over the place. My family does this for shots, blood draws, the removal of warts and cuts. It works far better than triple antibiotic ointment with pain killer.
My daughter did a science project in which she skin tested every pain relief product and Burn-Gel Plus was far superior to everything.
Funny thing is that we use witch hazel for sunburn and other burns rather than burn gel plus because witch hazel removes the burn heat which is more important than numbing the pain.

The more you tense your muscles, yelling and such,
the more it will hurt......so.....
Tell them you are scared
Ask to lie down
hold something comforting in your other arm
Think of something nice or far away
When you take a deep breath and let it out, relax
Consider, today, getting a clean pin and pricking your skin.
That will help you to lower your anticipation of the fear.
Some people do have a fear of needles. Even in High School, one of my kids would ask to sit on my lap for the shot, or atleast hold my hand.

Let the doctor know you are scared. He will know the best way to keep it less painful. It's actually not that painful at all. You need to relax and think happy thoughts. The more relaxed and less tense you are, the easier things are going to be. It's for the best. Be strong. Get some ice cream when you're done. That would be a happy thought to look forward to.

Wow, how about calming down there a little bit first. Its one shot. You don't even feel it, it might just sting a little. You act as if there cutting your arm off. Just look away. I don't know why your so scared, there isn't even much pain! Is it just the thought of the needle??

First tell the Dr. and Nurse, Second do NOT watch. Third understand that the diseases that you would get if you are not inncoculated would require many many MORE shots to cure. SO do you want ONE shot or a lifetime of them? You have a normal fear. You also need to put this fear into persepctive and you might need professional help to get over the fear so you take great care of yourself.
