Depends on what country you're in.
For USA, congratulations, your poetry is automatically copyrighted as soon as you release it to public view. That can be as little as showing it to someone.
Now, the automatic copyright protection gives you only the rights to prevent others from duplicating and distributing it beyond fair use. If you actually want to be able to collect damages, you need to register the copyright. That's not too expensive but it requires more detail than I can put down here: try doing a web search for "do it yourself copyright" or some such thing and you should find instructions, or else go pay a lawyer to do it for you if you have a few bucks extra.

The cheapest way to do it. (And this really is the Bo-bo way) is to use the poor man's copyright. Gather copies of your manuscripts and put them in a large envelope. Address it to your self and when it arrives DONT open it.
In the future, if you need to prove in a court of law, or anywhere else for that matter, you now have a sealed DATED (because of the postal stamp) copy of your body of work.
It's a far cry from the real thing, but it will hold up in court.
I know a lot of bands that use this type of copywriting until they can actually get their stuff published.
