I keep hearing that muslims must have their family find them a spouse, then they marry..

Is this the ONLY way for muslims to marry? Or just the most traditional?

I am asking because there is a 99% chance of me becoming a muslim, but my family would NEVER in a trillion years try to find me a spouse, nor would they converse with another family.. (They are just not the type of people to do that)

But I would love to get married, just not sure how it would work...

No freedom in Islam.

You might be able to find the ideal match online. There are some Muslim matrimonial websites. Or perhaps you could meet someone through an Islamic group or make some Muslim friends in the community who might be able to do some match-making for you to help find you a suitable partner or offer advice.
Salam.

Yes.... and im sure Islam does allow that freedom......but most Muslim families want to choose thier spouse because they just want to make whcih husband/wife is best for their son/daughter..... or probably because it's just a family tradition

no it is traditional or cultural , but in islam it isn't a must and not the only way ofcourse , but if u found the right for u then go ahead and purpose.
islam encourages marriage and family relationships and ocourse it is more preferable to choose her urself , u are the person who is going to marry and live with.

good luck ,

peace :)

edit: although that link isn't so related to the Q but it has a good point and has some other libks could be of help:

It's more of a cultural thing, or even a family thing, then a religious thing. Many of my Muslim friends have chosen their own mates, that group includes younger and older Muslims. However, I do have a few friends that have had their mates chosen for them.
