It stands for Farad (after Faraday). The u means "micro" as in microfarad.

it stands for 'microfarad'. The 'u' in this case means micro. The next lowest division would be picofarad or 'pf'. The whole thing comes from Michael Faraday who did pioneering work in electricity. 1000 pf's would be 1 uf.

"microFarad" which is a unit of capacitance. The "u" is used in place of "mu", which usually stands for "micro", since the Greek alphabet is not usual in typesetting.
