When I look at my cat I can see what I figure are his lungs moving a great deal more than usual and more than our other cats. If I pick him up he puts his tongue out and gasp for air.

He usually meows a good deal and purrs all the time, but recently no purrs and very few but also very weak meows. He has been mainly staying in a few spots and not that active. Also, he does not want to eat or drink much.

Although, last night we got him to eat and drink a little and he moved around. Today he also was moving around the house some and seemed to be somewhat better, but now he seems to be worse again.

I was planning on taking him to the vet hopefully soon, but was wondering what it could be and if there is anything I can do?

I took him to vet today (as was my plan) and they said his chest/lungs area was full of fluid. They could do a chest tap but she said that in itself might kill him and she thinks it probably is cancer anyways. And, even if chest tap and so forth works it doesn't look good for him.

So he has to be put down. Thanks for all the help everyone

I understand the desire that people have for coming to this site to have questions answered. I think it's great in that respect. However, it concerns me that there is a lot of people who spend time writing about pet illnesses here. I don't understand why someone's first inclination wouldn't just be to take the animal to the doctor, but to come to Yahoo! Answers for advice from mostly unqualified people.

Please, remember that the number one responsiblity in adopting any animal is to provide appropriate health care. Your cat is relying on your for help. Get off the computer, and take him to the doctor, immediately.

He's counting on you, please don't let him down.

It's most likely an upper respiratory, which can really clog up the lungs and nasal passages. Two of ours just got over these, and they both had the labored breathing.

The vet will have antibiotics that can help a LOT in just a few days. Don't put off on the visit, the breathing is very hard on cats when their noses are clogged. They eat less because they can't smell their food too, which can be a danger.

This sounds like he has Asthma, Asthma is very deadful in cats gone untreated, he can live up to a year without medication, but it is a painful and sad way to die for a cat. Take him to the nearest emergnecy vet clinic ASAP, he needs to be tearted now. Or it could be that for whatever reason his liver or kidney is failing. Now i don't know if you are aware if the Pet food recall that has been going this year because of tainted pet food that came from China (all dog and cat food come from China-Yikes), anyways, go to Menu doods website to see all the cat food (dry and canned) that we're recalled. It was contaminted with Wheat Gluten. Now this pet food recall occured in March-June, but there is still some tainted food on the market, check into it to see if this is the case.
In either case your pet is dire straits, he needs medical attention now. Good luck. God Bless

Please get the poor thing to the vet immediately. Our cat had the same exact symptoms and was scheduled for a vet appt. The morning of the appt., he became paralyzed and we rushed him to the vet. We were told he was full of fluid and it would be best to let him go peacefully. The vet suspected some type of cancer, but we chose not to have an autopsy done due to financial reasons. It has been almost a year and we miss that little angel more than words can say. We know it was best for him, but it was so hard to do. Please don't let you cat suffer, get him help ASAP.

Usually if it has something to do with a kitties lungs theres not much people can do but to take them to the vet to find out exactly whats wrong with your kitty. It could be allergies, asthma, infection, or just a plain little cold... I would get him into the vet as soon as possible and if his condition worsens i would get him into the Vet ER ASAP.. I hope this was helpful!!

Yes, look up the number for your local emergency vet clinic and drive him over there ASAP. Your cat is in tremendous pain and is having problems breathing.

There's a really weird kitty illness- my sister's really healthy & young neutered male cat got it- and he was acting all lethargic, just like that...it turned out that if this is untreated it could've killed him.

So- if I were you I wouldn't wait this one out...I'd get to the vet's and I doubt there's much you can do until then.

Your cat could be dying. Not trying to scare ya but usually that's it. Take him to the vet, hopefully they may be able to save him but do it right away because it sounds like he doesn't have much time left.
