I applied to the sheriff's office and got passed over, I asked the same question you did. H.R. said that they have reasons to hire and not to hire and that they don't share information with other countys or other city departments in the county. Three weeks later I was picked up by a city department that was taken over by the county a year later, so luckily I am right where I wanted to be.

When you apply for a job that requires a background investigation your results are not shared with other agencies. Or at least in my county, nor they disclose information why they didn't hire you. By the way nothing can disqualify you from becoming a deputy unless you have a felony or misdemeanor in your record, other than that everything will pass. I can't think of any position in the criminal justice field where you don't have to be a sworn officer, unless you want to be a secretary within a certain agency.

Agencies don't share the background info with others....
That being said, apply to as many agencies as you can over a short period of time. Many agencies will ask if you've applied to others and been declined - if you can say that you have applied but haven't heard anything, you've got a better chance than if you've got a few rejection letters in your file.
Different agencies have different standards. What's important is that you tell the truth, and show that you have since been living an exemplary life, that you can be trusted in all of your dealings, your finances show your responsibility, etc...
What you can also do is get hired by "any" agency in your state, go through the academy, and go through your probationary period. Then apply to lateral over to the agency of your choice. That way, they're not out the training money and can see that you've done well for yourself.
Good luck,
Calif Deputy

What's in your background that you are afraid of? I doubt very much this agency will conduct a background check for another department, each agency would do there own. It's difficult to answer this question without more facts. As for the criminal justice degree, many departments are now only hiring if you have at least a 2 year degree.

It depends about what's in your background.
The fact that one agency didn't want to hire you won't hurt you at another agency, but the same thing that kept you our of agency "a" may also keep you out of agency "b".
Some civilian positions may have less strict background requirements than a sworn position. Wouldn't help or hurt you.
A CJ degree won't hurt, but won't overcome the more serious background problems out there...

In my area all the PDs share backgrounds when requested. If you apply with one, they want to know if you applied with others. They check them all no matter what you say though. If they have some instant DQ info, they will save themselves the time and effort and cut you right there.
They also want to compare your PHQs and see if you changed any answers, as if you were covering something up. If you did, you can bet your *** you'll be blackballed all over.

Every department has different hiring criteria, so just because one doesn't hire you because of your background, doesn't mean someone else won't. In my opinion military carries more credit than college.
