in January of 2008 you will need a passport. I would expect you WILL in March or April.

They have not announced when it will be at this point. It could be as early as January 1, but will likely be later.
If I were you, I'd get a passport, just in case, now while you have enough time.
June 1, 2009 is the absolute last date it could be, but it will probably be sometime between Jan 1, 2008 and June 1, 2009.

I haven't heard about the "by car" deadline being extended passed January, so I can't answer to that, but I'm writing to give a little advice....regardless of deadline, plan on your passport arriving MUCH later than you expect. I applied a month prior to a trip, paid the rush fee to get it in 2 wks, and it never arrived. I had to fly to Houston for one day to appear in person at the Passport Center to get my passport for my trip. The line at the Passport Center was 7 hrs long, and that was just the beginning...it was a nightmare. I found out the hard way that Passport Agents are fustrated, unsympathetic, and basically evil. Save yourself the headache, apply now regardless of deadline.

Yes it will be madantory in JAN 0'8. Go ahead ad apply for one now. Sometimes getting a passport can take a year for it to fully process/

The passport thing just keeps getting pushed back. It may never happen. However, the wise thing to do is to get a passport now.
