There are completely different The old rattler is a good Eng but old tech== the 3 generation is the best> Quiet I have 04.5 new 600 series 325 hp with a 100 hp quadzilla . If your going to get 1= 04.5 = 06 not a 04 unless it's the 600 series eng as it has a 4" exhaust an a 48 trans stock big difference than 03=04.Nope this helps

In 2003 the 5.9 got a Common Rail fuel system and injectors that are capable of multiple injections, which is a big reason for the engine being quieter. It had some minor upgrades, but for the most part the Cummins 5.9 has been the same engine since it debuted in the Dodge Rams in 1989....it has just seen minor upgrades throughout the years, as well as injection pump changes for 94, 98.5 and 03. Both 24v and 24v Common Rail are electronic engines. The fuel system in the 03+ trucks is leagues better than the old 24v, especially the cp3 injection pump. The old 24v vp44 injection pump was pretty well known for failing, espeially when the lift pump began to fail as the only lubricity for the pump comes from the fuel.
So in essence the only major upgrade between the 24v and 24v common rail is the fuel system and injectors. Most other upgrades were minor. For more information join a forum!

45Cal is incorrect again ---- 03 & 04 CTD with the HO 5.9L 24Valve came with the 48re auto transmission same as the 600 series. Know this as my 04 HO has a 48re auto transmission.

The 04.5 models came with factory 4 inch turbo back exhaust with a Little box vs 03&04 HO CTD which came with 3.5 turbo back to muffler and muffler to tip was 4 inch minus the litter box.

Generation 3 is very simple and easy to increase the power with the installation of power/performance chip

03 and newer run much quieter than the 12V. They are basically the same except HP and torque.

03 SO (standard output) - stock 250 HP & 460lb/ft torque
03 to 04 HO - stock 305 HP & 555lb/ft torque
04.5 to 06 "600 series" - 325 HP & 610 lb/ft torque

The gen 2 CTD - automatics came with 47re transmissions which were somewhat problematic vs the new 48re.

some of the early 24 valves were the code 53 block (known for cracking) and the VP44 pumps must have fuel (lose fuel pressure and they die quickly)

the 03+ trucks are alright, fuel mileage has suffered, the common rail fuel system is pretty good, although i have seen injectors fail and fill the crankcase with diesel fuel (3 different trucks) power is great. the motor is quieter

both trucks are easy to chip and make decent power

there were minor differences but mostly equipment that is external on the 98.5 - 02, in '03 they went to a direct rail injection system that quietened the rattling of the diesel drastically.
