It depends on what you eat while you are walking, before you walk and after you walk. Eight miles is not a great distance, so I wouldn't expect stunning results.

The key to any weight loss plan is to set a routine that one can actually maintain for the long term. The routine should include exercise and diet. Any sort of exercise is a good thing. When a person reaches such a size, any sort of exercise is difficult. Walking is just about the best thing she can do. It's relatively low impact, and burns calories. My advice is to set a reasonable schedule, especially at first. When people decide to make a life change, they forget that it's a marathon, and not a sprint. They get excited and try to go out too fast. Start with 3 days a week of exercise for 30 minutes. Schedule the workouts on a calendar. That makes it easier to keep the schedule. Setting a schedule that is too aggressive, like exercising 6 days a week is too hard for anyone to keep up. She will lose weight quickly at first, then start to skip workouts. Once the skipping starts, that's the end. It's only a matter of time. It also helps to have a workout partner. That way it's harder to skip when someone else is planning on you. If you can commit to be that person for the LONG TERM it would really help. After a couple of months of walking, consider adding some LIGHT strength training. Muscle burns a lot of calories just to keep up. Building some will help her on her way. The key with the walking, and eventually the weights, is to avoid injury. At 389 lbs, a body is very susceptible to joint problems. Be careful, don't go too hard. An injury will derail everything. Buy good shoes and replace every 500 miles, even if they don't look worn. Diet is the other piece. At 389 lbs, it is going to be very easy to drop pounds. She should start by making small changes. Stop drinking soda. Just replace it with water. That alone makes a massive impact on big soda drinkers. Remember that there are about 3500 calories per pound of fat. In order to lose a pound, you must burn 3500 calories more than you eat. That's about 20 sodas. At 3 sodas a day, just removing pop will drop a pound a week by itself. Consider going vegetarian at lunch everyday. Consider drinking a full glass of water before every meal. Small manageable changes are the key to long term success. The other tip that I would give is that one day a week, she is not on a diet. A person can not deprive themselves everyday and be successful. There has to be a break WITHOUT GUILT. Guilt will kill her. Make it part of the plan, up front, to have a break each week. If she makes manageable changes for 6 days, and takes a day off, that will have a huge impact. She has to resist the urge to starve herself for a few weeks and quit. It's human nature, but it doesn't work. Remember, that the key is long term. Hard charging diet and exercise plans are too hard for most people. If the choice is to lose 50 lbs for good, or 100 lbs for a year, it's obvious. Good luck.

Walking 8 miles will burn about 800 calories, it takes 3500 calories to lose one pound. Keeping track of how many calories you eat, figuring your normal metabolic rate, that is how many calories you burn without exercise you can figure about how much weight you will lose in a month. That is a lot of exercise and if you control your intake you should have a good start to weight loss.

If combined with the right diet, a lot.
It is my lifestyle now. I am on low carb, low fat, high fibre, high protein and a hour brisk walk 5 times a week, and I have lost 31lbs/14kg and gained better health. I am now maintaining my 108lbs/49kg for more than a year, with more fruits and complex carbs.
Details such as my experience, meals, snacks, recipes, foods to buy, reading labels, walking as an exercise and to shape the body etc etc, are in my blog

It depends on your weight while exercising as well as the terrain. You burn less calories walking on flat land vs. walking uphill. Also, incoming calories will also effect the weight lost.

It depends on how many calories they take in every day and how fast they walk and if they swing their arms or not etc. It also depends if it all flat walking or some hills etc,.

When boredom, depression, or even stress causes cravings, find a nonfood way in order to meet them such as enjoying a walk, calling a friend, having a bath, reading a book, or maybe doing some yoga.
