First you cant live in the barracks with a dog.. also if you do get a dog or any pet for that matter...make sure you have someone to take care of your pet when you deploy, I work at the veterinary clinic here on post and we get so many pets in either because some one is deploying, or because the spouse bought it as a comfort item when their husband deployed, then when he gets home they no longer want or have time for the pet... just remember a pet is not disposable

If you are living in the dorms, pets of any sort are not allowed. Most military will live in dorms for at least the first three years of service..often times e-4 is the minimum rank needed to be permitted to live off base unless there is a serious shortage of space in the dorms. Once you move off base, you will more than likely be renting, so of course pets are at the discretion of the landlord. That being said, it is tough to be a good pet owner, especially for a dog which needs large amounts of exercise and attention, when you are single and in the military. You will often work 12 hour duty shifts, be required to spend additional hours in PT and community activities and many days be so tired when you get home that even taking a dog for a walk will be more than you may want. Then, there is the very real likelihood of being deployed to a comabt area, meaning the dog would need someone willing to take it in on a temporary basis. Even being shipped overseas can be tough for pets...often times, single military are required to live on base overseas, irregardless of rank, landlords in many countries are not as willing to allow pets and vetrinary care is tougher to get. Add in that the cost of moving the pet and having them quarantined if the required (England used to requires several months of quarantine although that may have changed) and the cost of bringing them along can be prohibitive. The honest truth is that it is probaly not in the best interest of the dog to live with a single military member...there is too much that can cause the dog to be passed from person to person and that simply isn't fair.

Its unlikely, but if you want one, you can get one, as long as you dont live in the barracks.
The reason why I say its unlikely if your single, because if your deployed and have no family or significant other, who is going to take care of the dog? Unless you have a good friend you can trust ya know.
Also you may get a overseas assignment and they might not allow you to live offbase, and if thats so, you cant bring any animals. But if you HAVE to have a dog, just put stateside on your preference sheets, and have a backup person to take car of the dog when your deployed.

You can get a dog. And if you get deployed there is a simple solution. There are many non profit organizations out there where people sign up to take care of a GI's pet while they are at war. They kind of adopt the animal for the time you are over seas. Some people might not want a stranger raising their animals though so then you can see if you have a friend that is willing to take care of you animals.

It will almost never happen in a barracks.
But if a soldier can afford to live off-base, of course! Many soldiers have pets, though for full-time soldiers the practice is discouraged. If the military wanted a member to have a dog, they would have issued one! On a long exercise or deployment, a dog would have to be left with friends and family.

not if you are in the barraks. But you have to also consider when you deploy. Where is your dog goin to go? Call the pound on base and ask them if they have dogs available. So many families and soldiers have to give up their pets, and then live with the sadness that these animals had to be put down. Even off base, towns with a base near them have a much higher rate of putting animals to sleep. If you are seriouse about getting a dog, please go save one. And instead of giving it up when you deploy, find a pet kenel in your area. They are listed in the yellow pages, and usually start off about 30 a month for a cat and 45 a month for a dog. Its pricy, but its your pet whom you should love and want to care for just like family.

I'm sorry to say unlikely. If you can get permission to live offbase as a junior enlisted, you could move out of the barracks and have a dog, but then what if you get deployed or a new assignment?

I work for an animal shelter and we are a block away form the Coast Guard station. Very regularly the Coasties come down to adopt. I guess it would depend on your living situation.

pets are not allowed in Barracks. Once you are given permission to reside off base, you can, assuming you have some one to watch it when you deploy.
