And which flight line can I trust? Delta? US Airways? American Airlines?

It really depends on the individual flight. It also depends on if you mean taking 3 planes or the plane stops between your destination (yes there are flights that stop on purpose between the final destination to let passangers off and on). The more tickets you have to purchase the more expensive it is. However sometimes travel agents get special deals where if you take up all the remainder of the flights then it cheaper.

The airlines vary just as much plane to plane. I say just go with the cheapest... just because you pay more usually doesn't mean you get more (many times I got more on cheaper flights). I have flown on two delta planes in a row and the service was way different. I guess the most important factor is how big your plane is (is it a transoceanic plane) If so you will have more space and more likely that you won't have people sitting next to you. They also have more stuff stocked up. More bathrooms. But the stewardess are more personable on smaller flights.
I like Delta they are friendly and so is American Airlines. It doesn't really mater, because sometimes one airline rents it's plane and crew to another. (I'm serious)
