a whey protein concentrate (WPC) is sufficient for pre and post workout. for any other time of the day you would want to use a blended protein. whey protein is considered anabolic because it is metabolized very rapidly and causes the amino acid concentration in the blood to spike which increases muscle protein synthesis.

blended proteins contain casein, egg white and usually some form of whey protein. the matrix of proteins provide both an anabolic and anti-catabolic supply of amino acids making it a great all around protein supplement but the cost is substantially more than your basic whey fraction.
